Default boxee on apple tv helps lower cable bill?

I have read where some people have made comments on how boxee has help to lower their cable bills (they can give up certain cable services).

How is this possible? I read where one person ditched all of their premium channels (HBO, Cinemax, etc). How can they then view those movies via an apple tv that has boxee loaded on it?

    Thanks much.

People aren't canceling cable to go with Boxee because Boxee offers identical functionality and lesser cost. They are ditching cable for Boxee because Boxee offers acceptable functionality for less cost.

Theoretically you can use Torrents to download HBO content. But that would be illegal and wrong. Did I mention how that was wrong?

I'm currently using PlayOn to allow me to stream all kinds of things from CBS to CNN to Hulu to YouTube to my PS3. I have canceled my cable subscription in favor of this. Now if Boxee could only do the same, which I have yet to see it do though I've heard some claims that it can. You see the problem is getting what Boxee can play off my computer and over the air to my PS3. This is a feat that Boxee cannot muster it seems, whereas PlayOn can - even through a VMWare VM running Vista.

I don't understand why people cannot see that what is needed is getting content from the internet to the large screen via a stream, nor why Boxee can't be commanded to do that. Then again, Boxee for me keeps hanging, crashing and just plain refusing to work...

It all depends on what you're willing to live without. If your heavily into sports, ie; ESPN, NFL, MBL, etc., then you'll probably want to keep your cable.

OTOH, if you get the channels (FREE) you need with an OTA antenna , Boxee on ATV can let you watch a lot of content when you want (FREE).

We got rid of cable almost a year ago. We have a Netflix account (less than $20/month) for both, physical dvds via the mail, and instant play through our Xbox 360, or laptop.

Our cable bill was around $90/month, that's $1080/year. You are probably already paying for Broadband Internet so I won't count that cost. Our current cost for television viewing is ... $0.

An ATV will set you back two or three hundred $'s. Antenna, wiring, ground rod, if antenna is mounted outdoors, and other accessories not coming to mind right now, will still be less then half a year's cable bill.

    Pretty cool!

Again, all depends on what you and your family are willing to do without.

Thanks much for the replies. My next question si what is better to run it on? Apple TV or a mac mini? And does boxee allow you to view video that others "share"?
