Media center extender support

Isn't this program built on XBMC... I used to work at M$ and they co-developed Windows Media Center Ed. and the "Harmony" interface with another project codenamed "Fjord". It was the open source sister to the evil Windows counterpart. Do you know if team XBMC (who probably built on Fjord) ever pushed content to extender devices like another Xbox or a Roku? It shouldn't be to hard to implement this feature into Boxee then too considering its origins...

searching google, i can't find anything called 'Fjord' from microsoft--at least in regards to mce/harmony/ehome.

i can say that xbmc is not 'built on it' though.

do you have any links that could be of use?

XBMC Media Center has nothing to do with Microsoft nor is it based on any Microsoft code. I think you are confusing XBMC with "Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender for the Xbox" (which was a add-on software and MCE remote product that Microsoft released for the original Xbox back in 2005).

Now this may not work with XBMC, but what about another brand media Extender. Linksys has a few, and D-Link has some as well. I'm thinking Linksys could be made to use it. They tend to use open source software for their devices. Anyone know if this is possible?

Hi. So If I understand the response, there is no support for Boxee to act as a windows media center extender? Is that true? Has anyone given this any consideration? I currently use the Silicon Dust HD Home run ATSC tuner to obtain over the air HD content, and schedule my recordings using Windows Media Centre. Then I stream this to my tv using xbox 360. Works well. I was hoping that I could use the apple tv with boxee solution in place of xbox 360. (Xbox 360 doesn't play all the file formats). Any suggestions?

Many media extenders will not play all file formats. There are numerous obstacles. While it is not the best option, although it works, you can use a converter. I use Magic Video Converter to convert my files to mpg. The disadvantage is the larger file size, but the quality stays high.

Now, as for BOXEE, I would greatly love this to be available as a firmware flash for media extenders. I have the WMCE54AG, and Linksys isn't going to update the firmware past 1.01, as they've already made that public. However, this model and brand isn't the only extender having this issue. There are D-Link, HP, Netgear, and other brand & model extenders that will not work with Vista or are not able to support certain formats.

If BOXEE were available for these devices, it could seriously boost the desire of having these devices. I know, I'd grab BOXEE right away if it were available for the WMCE54AG. What would be holding me back?
