Well, here's an unofficial answer: probably not going to happen. The Boxee team has to prioritize and I just can't imagine they'd spend the time on something like this rather than fixing the Boxee native player. But that's just my opinion.

Kinda disappointing to hear that. I understand that they have to prioritize, but I don't see it taking too long to stick in an external launcher, that's just me. I may have to start looking into other front ends for the time being.

I for one run a total of four "front ends" because I have yet to find my silver bullet:

    1) SageTV / HD-PVR for recording / playback most of my recorded 1080i content

    2) Boxee for online and some (but not all recorded) content (can't play back my 1080i .ts files from SageTV/HD-PVR without some serious aliasing in window'd mode; long standing issue)

    3) Windows Media Center 7 as the front end to my Hava Wireless HD tuner -- SageTV barely plays these files and I don't think Boxee even recognizes .wtv files currently

    4) iTunes for my music collection

Sad part is boxes would be my silver bullet if not for this mkv thing. I hate not being able to use boxes for hd content, but vlc / wmp do it just fine. Simple external launcher would solve all problems.

Keep in mind, too, that not everyone has the problem that you're experiencing. I have zero issues play 1080p mkv files.

Maybe the 64bit os makes the diiference. I may try win 7 64 and linux this weekend to see if it makes a difference. I thought from all the posts it was more widespread.

I would guess GPU hardware and/or drivers make the biggest difference. What are your system specs again? (OS, CPU, and GPU).

I'm certainly not saying that it's not a problem for folks but it's not a problem for everyone either

    Windows 7 32bit
E6600 dual core 2 ghz-ish(don't remember the exact clock)
    4 gig ram
    Ati hd5750 1gig ram

Just like most of the other people with this problem, everything works fine in other players, just not boxee.

It actually makes me wonder why the developers decided to write their own internal codec instead of just installing another or letting the user choose which codec / player.

Sad that this isn't going to happen it would make Boxee a much more useful front end, no player comes close to the flexibility of Zoom Player for most media types.

I agree this would be a GREAT feature.
