    Default Video Tearing - Intrepid

    Ok,

I'm experiencing Video Tearing while in Boxee in Intrepid.

    The system is a:

    PentiumD 2.8 Dual Core
    1 gig of RAM
    ATI x1300 256mb

Compiz is disabled and vsync is enabled. Drivers updated through the Restricted Drivers GUI to the latest and "greatest."

The tearing is actually system wide (Well, in VLC at the least), but I don't know where else to go to troubleshoot, as this box is soley used for Boxee (I use VLC still for DVDs as I find the controls in Boxee's DVD call not to be intuitive for audio options and the like).

    Any ideas?

Again, I politely ask if this is the correct forum to ask this question.

This is the second time I've asked for help and didn't really get any, so I'm not sure I'm in the right place.

proprietary ati drivers suck. They're essentially broken. Video tearing is a fact of life with the fglrx package (as far as my limited understanding of the matter goes), x1300 is an older card, ati (open source) drivers are probably fast and stable, have you tried those yet?
    Thanks,

Actually no... I didn't know that an alternative existed.

Wow... The system's only two years old. Wouldn't have figured that in the world of Linux that it would be considered that old. I'm stuck with it though, as I'm limiting myself on this project to what I have laying around the house, at least for now.

I'm trying to justify getting a refurb'ed Mac Mini

If you're running ubuntu, try disabling fglrx driver. the standard ati driver works fine for my x1600.
    Thanks,

    Done and done.

Video is considerably better, but still not what I would expect. As I've mentioned, I'm new to Linux. But it amazes me that basic functionality like this DVD playback, or video playback of any kind, is this problematic. I mean, let me put Vista back on there, and at least the DVD player works (this machine did run Vista without problems). I know a lot of it has to do with the hardware provider, but I'm just suprised.

Ok, whining done The tearing is still there, but oddly, its Z shaped across the center of the screen. My screen is tearing Zorro style.
