Post Boxee on Apple TV without the Apple bit :)

    Hi all,

Ive managed to get an AppleTV box and would like to swap out the hard drive with a 320 2.5" drive and have boxee on that.

    Two questions

    1) Can I just swap out the hard drive and use the usb thumb drive to install boxee to the new unformatted drive?

2)Can I configure boxee to load at startup and not have a menu where I have to select boxee?

    Thanks for your time.

When I got my AppleTV I was pretty sure I wanted to do what you described, or go a step further and eliminate all of the apple code entirely (AppleTV hardware + Ubuntu + Boxee). As it turns out though I have probably only had to reboot the AppleTV 1 time since I have owned it (~2 months) because I had to relocate it to a different bedroom. I have all but forgotten that there exists a software layer between the AppleTV hardware and Boxee because Boxee has been rock solid and not needed a single reboot. You may ask yourself if it is worth the hassle to modify the ATV scripts for something you will do so rarely.

I have all of my content on network storage, so I haven't tried swapping out the drive yet.

    My $.02. Enjoy the ATV!

I know im not answering your question, but unless your swapping out the drive for a larger one (which i think is unnecessary as well, streaming from your computer would be a better idea) it doesn't make sense to swap it out. Like scott314 said, you never have to exit boxee, and anyway I do use the AppleTV software for music, it works MUCH better than boxee right now

Thanks for the info. I too do have a NAS (Readynas Pro) however sometimes I travel and would like to take some stuff with me on the apple tv.

Anyone else have any input swapping out the hard drive or boot strainght into boxee?

Get an external HDD or network storage and enable the USB port on the ATV. That way, when you eventually update to a better piece of hardware from the ATV you still have all your media stored nicely on a drive you can just move to the next product.
