At the same time, we are also working to release a separate update to the Boxee Box to update the Flash player and fix some key bugs. After this update the Boxee Box will go into maintenance mode. We will discontinue its distribution and will not be releasing any additional major updates.
Welp, they finally admitted it. We're being told you're SOL after a mini last update.

EDIT: Here's a good post about why the boxee can't be "opened up" & what to expect on the last update:

Boxee Boxee TV does support file playback; it won't do artwork and identification like the Boxee Box does, but can playback most popular file types.

Boxee We plan to upgrade to a Flash 11 player as well as fix the shutdown issue. While we really wanted to make the Boxee Box open to hacking like you're asking for, it's not possible given agreements with premium content providers who require the box to be locked down to distribute their content on it.
Avner (who wrote today's blog post) is answering a FEW questions among the angry replies in that post.

Mods, feel free to tack on any more important info to this post since we all know most won't read 22+ pages of questions.

What exactly does "maintenance mode" mean?

Yeah, not really feeling the love for this Boxee device either. Pretty useless in Europe and I really don't feel the urge to pay $15 dollars a month for a Cloud DVR storage. It would be more palatable if they enable the use of local storage via for instance USB for DVR.

Maybe this is just supposed to be a low cost introduction model.

For now I'll stick to my Boxee Box, since it covers my needs much better. Hopefully they'll at least release a firmware update that will resolve the main issues before they throw themselves on this new device.

$15 a month.. LOL.. now they are even going to charge us to deal with their buggy firmware/software.

What we've been in most of this year. In the dark...no updates...fend for yourself for bugs...etc..
AKA. It's time to move on

Time to move on indeed... I held on to the BBox (which has been in the closet for months now) hoping (ahah!) against all odds that it would improve over time, which of course didn't. Off to eBay right this instant.

Honestly if I lived in the US, being the TV-Show freak that I am, I could consider the new box if it weren't for the bad reputation that Boxee now has.
It clearly lost all the local file playing abilities, but the "unlimited recording" seems nice. Now... off to see how it's really going to work, I'm sure the box has to compress recordings prior to upload which could damage PQ as well.

I'll honestly keep an eye on Boxee... hopefully they will fail for good

Edit: New website is up. "Boxee recommends minimum bandwidth of 3 Mbps download / 1 Mbps upload speeds for proper functionality."

so does this mean that local streaming is not a feature of Boxee TV?

Local media streaming not as robust? Bad move
