Re-scanning files question

Say I have 100 video files. 10 of them are identified by NFOs.

I rescan the drive. Will try and boxee re-identify the NFO videos or leave them alone?

i.e. - will a rescan mess up some of my file IDs?

As long as the .nfo files do NOT have an "ID" field then they will be left alone.

If the do have an "ID" field then on every scan BB will go out online and try to find the "missing" information for the file that has the .nfo file just like it does for every other file.

Is that what you mean? But no it won't mess up your 10 videos.

That's not quite how it works for a full rescan.

When using the "Rescan" command in the submenu for a file source, this results in a full rescan of that source, with full re-evaluation of all its content.

For movies or shows that were previously identified by NFO files still present, this should result in exactly the same NFO identification again, but for all such content whose NFO file did specify an ID code, Boxee will also try to find more information online. And if any such information is found then it may replace whatever information of the same kind you supplied in your NFO file (or replace your chosen 'folder.jpg'). Since new database information can differ from that found in an old scan, this may result in changed Boxee displays for some few shows/movies.

And for content that was NOT identified either automatically or by NFO, instead being identified only by manual search and specification in the search dialog, you will most likely have to repeat that work after each new full rescan. (One strong motivation for the creation of NFOs.)

By now you are possibly wondering why I repeatedly used the phrase "full rescan", since that should imply some other rescan method, and so it does. You can make a partial rescan of source folders or subfolders simply by browsing to the chosen folder (starting from the Boxee submenu ("Files" / "My Sources")) and in that folder move the cursor highlight to the 'Windshield wiper' icon and press the action button on the remote. This will start a single level rescan of that particular folder, without affecting information for any other folders.

Unfortunately this partial rescan is not fully reliable, and especially not with the latest firmware, which often misses new content in these partial rescans, making a full rescan of the source necessary.

I think I will continue to scan manually then, as I am quite particular in which ID tags the files have. I'm not really sure how the auo scan works. If you look at the film Taken (2008) for example, there are lots of versions available to identify it. How does it choose which ID file to take?
