Default Files on USB hard drive not showing up in files menu, and disappear on computer

Hey everyone this is my first post on the forums! I'm having a weird issue, and if this has been discussed then I apologize, but I can't find any resources on this issue.

So basically this just started the other day. I've been running 1.5 since I purchased the box in March, and haven't had too many problems, but the other day my bb decided it did not want to display some files in the files menu which I know for a fact copied to my 2tb western digital drive. But the weirder thing is that after plugging the drive back into my computer, the files were gone from my ext hard drive as well. So I re pasted them to the drive and tried again, but no luck.

Also, this might be note-worthy: this happened during copying parks and recreation season 2 (mkv) to the bb, however I re downloaded it (in avi format this time) and it only happens with about 7 episodes. however, it is starting to happen to about 40% of movies put on the drive and its getting VERY frustrating.
Adult content is viewable, I know thats been an issue for other people.
Also, I checked my drive for bad sectors and ran chkdsk and its fine.

Sorry for rambling, but any ideas here?

    thanks!

If this is happening when the Boxee Box in the loop, then I'd suspect a hard drive failure; either that or someone else in the household is deleting the files off the USB drive when you're not looking...

I can assure you that no one is deleting the files from the hard drive. I have my bb plugged into a tv on my desk for testing purposes to see if I can narrow down specific files or codecs that are not picked up.
Another odd thing, is that I realized when I paste the files that have been removed, it seems that just the file names were removed and the file is still physically on the disk. Because it doesn't re copy them, the names just show up again immediately.

Ran a few hard drive tests (boot disc and in windows) and drive checks out fine.

it seems that just the file names were removed and the file is still physically on the disk.
That's something completely different then. You need to be clear on the actual symptoms -- the files physically being there on the drive is completely different than if they are not.

the names just show up again immediately.
Okay just to be clear, they're showing up where exactly? On the My Movies and My Shows screen or are the appearing/re-appearing via the Files browser (Files from the Boxee Home Screen, then browsing your USB drive).

My apologies, I've been experimenting and trying different scenarios to see what happens. let me be a little more detailed:

It started when I copied the parks and recreation season 2 folder to the usb drive, and six or seven of the 24 files did not appear under "files" on the bb (settings>files>tv shows>parks and recreation season 2).

Upon plugging the drive back into my computer, I saw that the files were no longer stored on the hard drive. So I re copied the missing ones and made sure they were on the drive by plugging the drive into another computer and playing them on the second pc, and then I plugged the drive back into back into boxee.

After plugging back into boxee, I encountered the same issue; S02E17 - S02E23 were all missing in the files menu.

I plugged the drive back into my computer, and tried to copy the missing files to the usb drive AGAIN. This time, however, I realized that when I clicked paste, the copying process went extremely fast for 1.4gb (even considering the fact that I have usb3.0) and the files then appeared on the drive in windows explorer (not in boxee). I played all of them to verify they were stored on the drive - no issues.

so hoping it was a weird one time glitch, I plugged it into boxee again, and I still am unable to see the files in boxee files menu (settings>files>etc..)

To me it seems like boxee just doesn't like a codec or something like that within the files, but I don't understand how it would happen to some files and not others when they were all ripped the exact same way?
I hope I cleared some questions up!

    settings>files>tv shows
Settings is where you go to add new FOLDERS to the Boxee Box to scan.

To see if Boxee can actually see the new stuff on your drive try this:

From the HOME SCREEN, click on Files, then on LOCAL (I think it is) and then you should see your USB drive and then you can browse through it to see if you can everything you expect.

If you see some folders or just some files under tv shows and not others, then it is most likely a permissions problem for the missing folders / files.

Ah, understood. Like I said, new on the boxee forums!

anyway, from home screen I click on files, then browse (maybe thats what you were thinking when you said local, that option is not on bb) then select my usb drive, then navigate the where the files should be, but they are still not there.

What kind of permission issues do you think I could be having?

Hrm... Under your folder "tv shows" are there multiple folders and some of them don't show up? Or is it just these latest episodes that don't show up?

If it's the latter, then I would try the following:

    Turn of the Box
Remove the USB drive, and connect it to your PC
Delete the problem files from the USB and re-copy them from the PC
Connect the USB drive back up to the Box
Browse to the folder and see if the missing files show up this time

Tried that and it didn't work with my usb 3.0 port.

But I went and double checked the permissions on the files and verified that it was set to "Everyone" has full control, then plugged the drive into my usb 2.0 slot (its a 3.0 hard drive btw), re copied, and everything shows up fine!

Strange solution, but I'm happy its working now!

Thanks for your quick replies, much appreciated
