What is Fanart for? Not understanding the purpose or where it is viewed at....

Boxee doesn't support fanart. What it does support (generally speaking) is thumbnails for tv show episodes, episode listsings for shows, and cover art; for movies, there's cover (poster) art, movie synopsis, and ratings.

Fanart is generally a full background image for a particular tv show or movie. Here's an example of one from XBMC for the show Without a Trace. On the left is the episode thumbnail image, on the right is the list of episodes and the background iage would be called fanart.



Here's another kind of fanart (from a PVR application with a custom skin) for movies; as each movie poster/cover art is displayed, the background image changes:
