Does someone else think it might be the hardware?
It's always possible, especially since I do this all the time for both wired and wireless connections.

If it's a relative new box, you can contact D-Link for an RMA.

    - Took it to a friends place to try on his network - Same issue
    - Reset it to factory defaults - Same issue
    - Installed the latest firmware update via USB stick - Same issue

The reason I'm doing this is I need to run a custom DNS server to get Netflix running properly. The custom DNS is for unblock.us. I thought this was the issue, but then I tried with my normal DNS and its giving me the same issue.

Beginning to think its a hardware problem.... Anyone else got any ideas?

    Thanks!
    Exact same problem.

Out of curiosity, what router do you use? I have a Billion 7404VNPX. The router isnt the issue, as I run my appleTV thru a static IP and its wireless.

I've also been talking to Boxee, they think its a software bug....

If your router is provisioning an address range of 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.150 (for example) and your router provisions you an IP of 192.168.1.2, then you change your settings to manual, It's best to set your Boxee to an IP that is outside of your DHCP scope. IE: 192.168.1.200. I had an issue where I forgot to exclude my Boxee IP and the router DHCP provisioned the same IP as my static Boxee IP to another device on my LAN, causing an IP conflict and all sorts of issues on the Boxee Box.

When you switch to manual network settings on the Boxee Box and you have WIFI, you must re-select you SSID and re-input your SSID password. You can only input on DNS address when you set the Boxee Box to a manual network configuration.

I am doing exactly what you are attempting using playmo DNS.
I have done this setting on both a Linksys router and my current DLINK router without issues.
    Boxee Box: Hardware Version: A1, Firmware: - 1.5.1.23735 - Boxee+ 1.2.2

Currently I have mapped the MAC address of the Boxee to 192.168.1.2. I've checked the DHCP table, there is no other device on that number.

I tried what you said about re-selecting the SSID and entering the password, but it still didn't connect (I really had my fingers crossed this time).

Thumbs down Wireless - DNS manual setting issue confirmed by Boxee support

    TO ALL BOXEE WIRELESS USERS

Boxee support have confirmed today that there is a bug when using wireless connectivity. This issue comes about when trying to make manual network setting changes on the Boxee, Namely DNS and/or IP address changes.

This isn't just a manual settings issue.

    Take a look at this:
    http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-10420

Regardless of whether you use Auto or Manual, the wifi isn't connecting correctly. I wasted 2 hours with D-Link tech support troubleshooting the problem. I ended up RMA'ing my boxee. The new boxee arrived and had the same problem regardless of whether it was using Factory default settings or the latest 1.5.1 firmware.

My boxee won't auto or manual connect unless I click on "Save/Apply" settings in the network config. I don't have to enter any information, I just click on "Save/Apply" and then it will connect via Wifi. I have to do this every time I turn my boxee on! I called tech support again. Tech support wasn't even aware of the Boxee Issue tracker website I mentioned above and claimed they could not access that website from Tech Support. I tried both my boxees with D-Link and Linksys routers. The issue with the wifi exists regardless of the router brand or chipset.

Should I go ahead and tell my friends not to buy this thing or what? Seriously, a tech support office that isn't aware of its own issue tracker website that also can't access it?!

And before this all starts back at square one, yes, I've set it to factory defaults (even though that is what it ships with and that is clearly marked on the box to begin with). Yes, my DNS is correct. Yes, my gateway is set correctly. Yes, my IP is set correctly. All of my other Wifi devices connect just fine. It's the boxee that isn't working. I wasted $20 sending it back to be RMA'd. Why is it that D-Link/Boxee tech support is unaware of the problems on their own websites/forums?

D-Link is the manufacturer and has no direct connection to Boxee firmware development (or the Boxee JIRA site or this forum, both of which are managed by Boxee, not D-Link). And it is not uncommon for first level phone tech support to not have web access to other sites.

For what it's worth, I've never had the sort of issues you described using wifi (dhcp or manual) and while yes, this is a bug, it's not one that everyone experiences...

I would say the chances of your friends having the same issue are pretty small but if it's a major concern, have them purchase the box from a retailer with a good return policy. If the issue pops up within the first two to four weeks they can return the box.

Seriously? You're going to try and make this seem like a misunderstanding about who handles firmware development?

The tech support for D-Link, after being elevated twice, still didn't know what the Boxee tracker site was. The tracker site isn't just about firmware either if you look at it.

I tried the Boxee tech support e-mail process and guess what, they referred me back to D-Link phone support!!!! Before I started dealing directly with D-Link, I asked Boxee tech support over e-mail, and no, they did not know about the issue tracker website and that was after having my trouble ticket elevated twice to a another person at Boxee!

As for random chances...My friend bought a Boxee Box from Newegg. He is having the same issue. I RMA'd my Boxee and the new one that D-Link swore up and down would be 100% working has the exact same issue! We tried several different wireless routers with no security or anything special and they still would not automatically reconnect after being turned off.

Instead of defending them, ask your buddies at Boxee about this Wifi issue and why it is they haven't done anything with it. The Boxee Issue tracker confirms that much. Ask where the next firmware update is too since they are past due for the previously stated quarterly update.
