my two examples/choices/options were to keep sitting around and not fix the current box (let's face it, it most likely isn't going to happen - intel isn't doing anything) or EOL it and move forward. someone isn't going to be happy either way.

I think I better go ahead and sell one of my boxes. I'll just put the money aside to go toward the newer one. What are they used boxes going for now?

On ebay used ones are going for about $120 in clean shape with the remote and power supply. I picked one up off craigslist recently for $75 and turned it over for a quick $40.00 profit.

They can, and I imagine would, tidy up as many bugs as they can on the current BB and keep it alive, but if you all expected that the first BB was going to be a truly future-proof piece of hardware, well, that just an unrealistic expectation. Every product reaches an end of life. Look at Apple, they pretty much have started the EOL process on the original iPad and that is only 2 years old as well.

Technology moves fast, new standards come out, new codecs are adopted and older ones abandoned.

This is the way of tech.
Sure every device has a EOL, but thats not stopping Apple from pushing updates for the iPad2 and iPad1. Yes new hardware is fine after 2 years in my books, but knowing Boxee as soon as the new HW is out they will just abandon the current box and all the bugs it has. I'm sure they can still fix the many many bugs it has minus a few like HD audio unless they get the SDK.

That to me is a big FU to all the current customers, I paid a premium for and expected premium produced or I would just continued to use my Asus O!Play and will never buy a Boxee product again if they stop support. The current box has many great features but Team Boxee i'm loosing faith in. You know how many people would be pissed if Apple followed Boxee footsteps?

Sure it is -- iOS 6.0 will NOT be released for the iPad this fall.

Oh, and let's not forget that the fact that if you want certain features (e.g. Siri) you have to be running the latest hardware (iPhone 4S or iPad 3) even though both the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 have the hardware capable of doing so. Talk about forced obsolescence!

(AND iOS 5 BARELY runs on the iPhone 3GS so not all updates are a good idea)

Blaming intel is kind of pointless.
The flaw in HD audio is indeed theirs but boxee knew the chip-set was being discontinued when they used it and didn't do adequate testing to confirm it worked correctly.
We all know just how little testing boxee puts into the firmware since they continued to release bug ridden versions ever time.

Regardless of the chipset they use they need to get off their butts and do a correct job of it.
Now if they figured out that very important lesson or continue on this lets make money forget the users path is anyone's guess.

Seems doubtful it'll have a more powerful processor due to the cost. If there is a Boxee Box 2 it has to retail for less than $100 or it's another non-starter. It doesn't matter what the feature set is. The competition has set the price for Boxee. They are trying to make a mass market consumer product and $100 is the upper limit these days.

Well what other mobile/low-power/economy processors are out there that could be used other than the Intel Atom CE4100? I assume something built off Raspberry Pi won't have enough horsepower, right?

I do agree with your point that it needs to get down to ~$100 to be successful in the market place.

I think $200 is pretty steep for a media player which isn't supported very regularly. I love my boxee, but I basically use it offline to play local HD content, so it does what I want perfectly. I'd willingly pay $150 for a new version, but if they drop all support for v1 and focus on v2 only...then they will probably lose me as a customer and I will jump ship to ASUS.

iOS 5 was the best OS for 3GS. Working smoother than ever.
(You don't like Apple and iPhone, do you? Since you're spreading false info about it all over the forum, I mean...)
