Thread: When will the shutdown bug be fixed? Is my Boxee being damaged?

Default When will the shutdown bug be fixed? Is my Boxee being damaged?

It's been two months since the last release, and the shutdown bug that many people were having prior to the release was not fixed.

50% of the time, I have to hold down the power button in order to shutdown the box, as it won't shut down normally.

If I had to do this on my PC, I could cause hard disk corruption or a hard disk crash. What assurance do I have that this is not causing a similar problem on my Boxee Box?

The Box doesn't have a hard drive so there's no physical head touching a platter to cause a problem if you should happen to stop during mid-write.

As far as "when", that question generally isn't answered via the forums...

Let me take a whack at this one.

From my personal experience of just holding the power button down for 5 seconds, instead of screaming at Team Boxee to fix it...

    1. I don't have to enjoy the fun anymore of yelling at them for things YET to go unfixed.
    2. I have alot less headaches now because of it.
    3. I normally power off my boxee box while playing a video or music on my boxee box EVERYTIME. My box has not crashed yet as of 200+ power off's while a file was playing back on my boxee box from a USB flash drive. I know it's probably not recommended but when the fix everytime for boxee box is to do a factory restore of the boxee firmware to the solid state memory, I just figured the worst it will get is to have to do that again. I wouldn't hook up an external drive to it though and try that... once it locked my disk up and I had to format it and lost everything on it... but other then that, flash drives and network shares during power off appears harmless.

Just my 2 cents... feel free to ignore them.

I've never had this shutdown issue with my three boxes. But within the last few days, the box in my main setup started having this issue. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning the box was still on and did not shutdown from the night before. I have no idea why. Especially since my other two boxes are still shutting down properly.

For the last few weeks my box has not been shutting down about half the time. I didn't even notice it was still on until I turned on the tv and saw it stuck on the menu. Having just had back surgery it is a minor inconvenience to reach mine which is shoved out of the way on a low shelf. I can reach it with my Boxee-approved back scratcher.

That's the problem, I have an external drive hooked up with all my media on it. I cringe everytime I have to force-shutdown the Boxee.

It's interesting that when I brought up this issue back in January , most of the people on the forum, were just saying what are you talking about?!?
[I was told] just do a factory reset and it should resolve it and don't make a big deal about it...

A factory reset does not resolve the problem. I can reproduce this 100% of the time simply by rebooting a file source when the box is connected to it. Not necessarily streaming from the source, just being connected to it is enough.

I know [I was told that / not recommending it at all] and for that matter I never performed factory reset for such a simple task !

Factory Reset to me is Boxee support/users don't know what's going on and just hope for the best!

I know what the TS are talking about, because my box also have this issue.

And sometimes when I start the box it goes yellow because the settings for the network went nuts and lose it.
