Default 1080p streaming - Have Audio No Video

I just got my Boxee box today. My Boxee Box and laptop are on a wired LAN connection connected to my 1080p tv. When I try to play 1080p .MKV files I get only the audio but the screen just stays black. I am accessing these files through a Windows Network (SMB) and I have my Boxee box set for 1080p output. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem is?

Most likely the problem is an unsupported codec!! Please post video file information using MediaInfo.

Sounds like it might be a Hi10p (10 bit) file? Use MediaInfo as suggested.

I hope this is what you need to see from MediaInfo. Maybe someone could let me know if this is an unsupported codec?

'High 10@L4.1' ... yep looks like a Hi10p (10 bit) file, BB can't play a 10 bit file. Weird I thought it was just anime stuff that was using it. Evidently you will not find many, if any dedicated players that play 10 bit, just your computer.

Is it a hardware limitation stopping the Boxee box from playing these kind of files?

I believe so ... see here and here. Check the bit depth on the file to make sure it is 10 bit.

By the way MediaInfo Lite is much better.

    HAH!

I knew when I saw this posting that it most likely was the stupid ESiR version of Game of Thrones you were trying to play. You are trying to play one of the few rare files that the boxee can't play...infact most/all current media players (including windows medial player) won't play this file because it is not encoded in a standard way. There is nothing wrong with the boxee box or with it's ability to play 1080p content.

Yeah 10 bit encodes are a huge PITA. I just switched from Boxee Box to an HTPC with XBMC and even on that powerful PC XBMC by itself couldn't play these files without macroblocking and other image artifacts. I finally had to add MPC-HC with MadVR as an external player and set XBMC to switch to it for any file with 10 bit or hi10p in the file name. The files play beautifully now and for anime I can definitely see the benefit. It just sucks that they decided to jump on this when there are very few options to play the files without issue currently.
