Question Access files from Shared Storage

    Hi Guys,

First let me begin by saying I'm kind of a n00b in the whole network sharing area, so excuse me for asking dumb questions

I have a router with an attached USB hard drive which I set up as network share. I can access it from all my computers within my wireless network by adding a network drive to \\192.168.1.1\Volume1 on my windows pc's. My question is simple: is there a way to access the same storage from my boxee box? Or do I need to set up a media server as wel? My router does have, though limited, some uPnP support I believe...

    Thanks for helping!

Yes you can access the same share from the Boxee Box.

Follow the guide from here: http://support.boxee.tv/entries/2075...s-file-sources

    Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. Could you be a little more specific on what protocol to use? I thought it should be NFS but Boxee doesn't find anything. Off course then I can add one manually but I'm struggling with the credentials. what IP/name should I enter when I use \\192.168.1.1\Volume1 on my windows machines. I suppose I don't need to fill up an username or password...

    Thanks again!

    Well i use SMB.
Under settings somewhere in Boxee Box (not sure where and dont have the boxee in front of me) you should be able to add username and password.

    See if that works.

Also check if you can browse the network folder by going to files and then to network.

I can check more from home later if you need more help.

Unfortunately that didn't work. When I go to Sources the SMB protocol isn't showing any devices. Browsing the network folder by going to files and then to network doesn't seem to work either. I still have to select a protocol, which I'm still unaware what to choose... Is there no way to tell the boxee box to actually go to \\192.168.1.1\Volume1 ??

I would say that it shouldn't be this difficult since it is such a simple procedure in windows...

When you access the "Windows Network (SMB)" option through "Add Sources" there should be an option "Manually Enter IP/Name" at the bottom to manually add a server by IP address or name. Can you see that? If that option is there, try clicking on it. It should bring up a box with 3 fields. Enter the IP address in the "Host Name/IP" field. If you need a username and password to access the share enter these in the Username and Password fields, otherwise leave them blank. Then click OK and see if it shows the available shares.

In Windows, instead of adding by IP/Volume_name, try browsing your network/workgroup to see if anything shows up. I'm guessing you won't see anything.

Accessing SMB (that's what you're using) shares in Windows is pretty much the same as from Boxee. The only time you'll see any entries when "browsing" is if the device hosting the shares is broadcasting them.

That did the trick! I figured the default user/passw for my share was guest. Boxee is now scanning the sources, hope to be listening to my music in a few minutes! Thanks a lot!!
