Handbrake uses & requires VLC. VLC isn't just a player (that will play encrypted DVDs), but can handoff the video/audio from a played source to another program for encoding. I've only come across one DVD that Handbrake/VLC couldn't work with and that was Golden Compass due to some encryption/protection issue. Until I had that difficulty, I had forgotten that DVDs get encrypted at all. Handbrake is also multi-threaded so I find it performs quite well.
