Default Boxee as audio source in iTunes

I just installed an Airport Express and when I go to select the output ( computer / Airport Express )in iTunes , Boxee shows up as a source. Is it possible to stream from iTunes to Boxee or has it just recognized Boxee on the network ?

    TIA

I just tested it out again to be sure, and it looks like it's still only possible to send video from iTunes to your Boxee Box, but you can't send audio only files (like mp3's) to your Boxee Box. (The audio in video files that you send to your Boxee Box works just fine - I don't know why audio-only files don't work?)

Interesting..I just opend iTunes and selected an audio mp3 file and when I went to check Boxee ( in another room ) it was playing ! I could even pause and adjust the volume through Boxee. The on screen display shows STREAMING...don't know how I did it though ? I had selected MULTIPLE SPEAKERS , including the AE and Boxee...don't know if that had anything to do with it..?

Boxee has enabled AirPlay streaming since v1.2, that's what you're seeing here.

    It's available under Settings>>Network>>Servers I believe.

Audio should always work on non-DRMd files (e.g. mp3s, podcasts). Video from iTunes and some iOS players (e.g. YouTube, trailers, and other non-DRMd content and non-custom video players) will also work.

Yeah, that's how you do it. In iTunes (or any other AirPlay enabled app), you "send" the playback of the media to your Boxee Box.

Hrm - I've never been able to get audio files to play on my Boxee Box - I'll have to mess around with it some more and see if I can get it working, of find something in the logs as to why it's not?

I did a little more testing...

My main computer is a Mac running OS X 10.7.3 and it's iTunes can use my Boxee Box as an AirPlay video destination - with at least one serious bug. I can start videos just fine, but if I pause/stop the video in iTunes, it continues playing on my Boxee until it's over, or I stop it manually with my Boxee remote. I still am not able to play unencrypted aac nor mp3 audio files on my Boxee from OS X.

As a test, I brought up a Windows XP virtual machine in VirtualBox (on the same Mac), installed iTunes, and loaded it with a few mp3 audio files and a video file. Upon initial testing, trying to play an mp3 via AirPlay to my Boxee would pop up a new window stating it was trying to connect to my Boxee, but it never did. I tried that a few times, using different mp3's, without success. Next I tried playing a video file - it worked fine, and I was able to pause and resume playing without any serious problems. Next I tried playing an mp3 again, and this time it worked - not sure if I had to get "connected" to my Boxee with the video file first, or if something else made it work?

So, it seems that the Windows version of iTunes works better with Boxee, but both Windows and Macs tickle some bugs with Boxee's implementation.

I love the airplay with music to my boxee.

It works great! And it kind of makes up for the hard to use music interface on boxee.

I'm glad it works for you fredrogers!

    What OS are you on?

What AirPlay enabled app(s) are you using to push content to your Boxee?

I used to be able to do this fine but now it just tries to send to boxee and never does. I have itunes on my Mac laptop and when I click the feature to send to boxee, it just comes up 'connecting' to boxee but the connection never completes.

Any idea why it stopped working? Did a boxee upgrade change something or what?
