Default Just thinking ... about vpn.

I'm considering buying a Boxee Box.

    A hypothetical question:

Can Boxee Box be set up use VPN? I live in US. I want to use VPN to access the BBC iPlayer.

    Is this possible?

Yes you should be able to access iPlayer with a UK VPN service (as long as the service gives Boxee an IP that Boxee identifies as being in the UK).

So... the vpn setup is available from the Boxee Box (I have a vpn account in the UK), or do I have to set it via my router?

There is a VPN PPTP available in the Boxee settings.

    Default Yep, it works fine!

I just used StrongVPN to configure my Boxee Box to open a PPTP VPN to London, and watched the second season of "Sherlock" with the Box's BBC iPlayer app.

    Worked just great!

Make sure you have the network bandwidth to handle it. StrongVPN's bandwidth is enough to handle it, but you need to make sure your own ISP doesn't have enough variation in the bandwidth they actually provide you to sink things. As it is, the iPlayer does have to buffer one or two times toward the beginning of a show, on my setup, but after that, when it's gotten enough headroom, no further problems.

I do it all the time with a US VPN.
Once you configure it on the Box, whenever you wish to use an app that needs a VPN connection you just enter that VPN settings and hit connect.
It's not ideal, I'd love to have a 'connect' shortcut somewhere, but it works fine.

Haha, yeah, a "connect with VPN" button would be awesome. Never happen though.
