The Big Picture App and image cropping
Seeing content from The Big Picture on The Big Screen is awesome, I use it all the time :-)
That said, if the image on the site has an aspect ration different of that on the TV (say, a portrait or vertically-oriented picture), the app will crop it to fill the entire screen, which makes it hard to appreciate the image.
I much rather the app would just best-fit the image in the center of the screen leaving empty space to accommodate for differences in aspect ratio.
Thoughts?

I agree, but unfortunately Boxee is missing the aspect ratio options "fill width" and "fill height" that makes this possible. Currently we can only either do "keep" and the image is fit inside the screen, or we can do "scale" which fills the image on the screen, both width/height.
A solution, which I intend to do with my own app, is to add the image dimensions to the RSS feed, and then set the aspect ratio conditionally. Landscape images gets "scale", while portrait gets "keep". The Big Picture App could do something similar.
