Luckily I don't even have the problem, I just set all of my receiver's input default volume control's to 35 for all inputs and presto, everything starts out at 35 when I switch inputs. Something to be said for modern equipment. As for the profanity, well, I spent 20 years in the military. Nuff Said.

This is a classic example of a WTF? "Won't Fix"

    http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-11758

Let's see, DHCP provisions two DNS entries if you have your Boxee Box in DHCP mode. However, if you statically assign your IP info, you can only input one DNS address. I mentioned it to Marcel and he said to put in a ticket.

So I put a ticket in and it gets the "Won't Fix" IE: can't be bothered treatment.
"ANY" normal network device that allows static entry will normally allow you to input two DNS addresses.

Reason: We support only one DNS and there's no plans to change this.

Yeah, I do a similar thing too. But then some apps somehow play at a dramaticallly lower volume. I can see why one would want the feature back...but again...not all things are a big deal to everyone. One mans necessity is anothers "who cares."

Sorta like my sort issue that's been broken for over a year now. Which is a total pain in the ass when it comes to installing new beta builds and your movies are sorted no matter what to the oldest or newest...not be the truly most recently added. Aaarrgghh.

Obviously the Boxee team can't be bothered to correct simple things like DNS functionality and better IR remote control support. Haven't you heard, all of their resources are tied up in the *TV DONGLE*! It's revolutionary! Finally, you can stream your free OTA content to your Boxee, just like the Windows MCE circa 2007! That is, if you have any use for this functionality.

Putting aside the sarcasm, Google TV may not be there yet, but I'm already getting that itch for something that better meets my requirements. Maybe Google TV with Plex? All I need is a solid local streaming client and it kills me to see all this peripheral stuff being developed that has zero value for me. I know, it's not all about *me*. But I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation that Boxee should focus on basic issues with the feature set that's advertised on the outside of the box, before expanding into new areas.

With the release of Boxee 1.5 though, there are new bits and pieces in there you may not have noticed. The Live TV dongle from my understanding will use a new interface built directly in 1.5 for coaxial and HD antenna signals like local news. I can't argue with Team Boxee this time because they actually fixed a very important bug for us and every other developer I think that can't be under-appreciated... PushState() was fixed so now when I browse lists in our app, it remembers the position that was last selected in perpetual lists. I've been getting at them for like a year and a half before they got it fixed but to their credit... they got it fixed.

Granted it took them a year and a half to get it working, it's not like they didn't have a lot of transitioning to do before they could make it so. I think change is built 1 day at a time and they have a lot on their plate that people don't realize, especially if your not in the coding business or have no idea how it works. While they've also spoken less and less about what they plan to do or not do, I think it's safe to say we all need to have a little bit more measure in our responses... a little pausing and thinking about what we really want to communicate when we're on the forums. Nobody on Team Boxee is holding knives to our throat, forcing us to use their products. The product is stable enough for me and the general public to perform well and I personally find if you just reach out to Team Boxee, they will get through it eventually... sometimes it's just not going to be on your schedule.

If that's not fair, then I don't know what is.

By the way NomadDNA, I got the plug pulled on my moderator status already!
I should have known that would last all of 5 seconds.

Ok, there's a pretty simple reason why they haven't added volume control functionality... because they already took it out. Because it was annoying as hell deciding which programs use the volume control ability and which do not and having to inconsistently change remotes, and they simply can't guarantee the ability to put volume control on every single third party app, so why do it at all?

We enabled the feature (manually) because let's face it, we're nerds. We don't want to lose precious functionality we already had when really no-one misses it, that's just the way nerds work. I want ogg vorbis ability on all my music players! I want to passthru DTS! I want to stream TED lectures in HD! There's catering for and pleasing your fanbase and there's alienating people. This is a prime example. My friends don't miss volume control, my family and my girlfriend don't miss it. Everyone has a TV remote, it's not like you can't turn the volume down! The future is internet TV, we can't blame boxee for making it as attractive as they can so they build a name for themselves before others. It's an obvious design decision to make an experience consistent; having to remember which apps and which websites I can change the volume on is dumb.

I personally think removing volume control is OK only if they add functionality to normalize volume levels.

IronBill, I respect your opinion and obviously you offer a lot more on these forums then I ever will, so thanks.

A lot of these bugs get closed out as "won't fix" with little or no rationale. The one that burns me up the most is the improved IR remote control support, which was deemed "good enough for me" by some developer who refused to discuss any further. The user who submitted the bug spent a lot of time laying out every changed that was needed and it as voted up pretty well. But it's clear that there are many many other examples that represent reasonable expectations from other members here.

While you may have had some success in communicating your issues to the team, many people haven't. What do people get for trying to communicate their issues, or to vote them up? "Won't fix", only to be followed up by a big press release about a TV dongle or a social media feature that no one asked for.

Honestly, I see very little discussion here about features like "posting to Facebook". But I see a *ton* of discussion surrounding issues streaming media, managing meta data, disabling subtitles, etc.
