Default SMB issue - Not able to see content from hdd

    Hey folks,
New boxee box user here, having a bunch of trouble getting content from my hard drive on my PC to show up as a local source on my boxee. I am able to "see" the drive, but it always asks for a username and password. I do not have any login for my PC or for the hard drive.

I have tried to google it, as well as search it on here, but i can't seem to find the answers i need. I love the boxee box so far but have been unable to use local content and I am dying to get it working, please, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bryant

What's your BoxeeBox firmware version, check under Settings > System > Boxee Build/Version ?? Is your PC & BB connected wired or wireless to the router ?? If BB is wireless then try a wired connection to the router . Also make sure you've shared your Hard drive to everyone on your network, check this by right click on on drive > Share With

Hey Jasmeet, Thanks for replying. I have updated to the latest firmware version as of 4 days ago. Can't double check the firmware version as I am not home at the moment. I am direct connected to the router/wired. I am using windows vista and have selected "Share" for this specific drive. The status of the drive is showing as "shared" and i have "password protected sharing" turned OFF. Any other ideas?

Also, it may be worth mentioning this is my second hard drive - I am not sharing the C drive - only the X drive.

    I am using windows vista
THere is your problem then. File sharing on Vista is an absolute Dog.

This really isnt boxee's fault - its just so hard to successfully share sources on a Vista based machine. You have to be a Microsoft Overlord or something apparently.

sigh... yes I know windows vista does blow hard. Is there no way to get it to work? Why can I stream content to my PS3 using the windows media server (and TVersity for that matter) but not my boxee. I am not a complete noob with networking ... just a little green with the finer details of it, but is there any explanation as to why a vista machine won't share with boxee box (but will with a ps3 without issue)? As a side note, I just had a discussion with my boss, she has a Mac and is also unable to get her local source to read, albeit I haven't discussed what troubleshooting she has done.

Those devices aren't using SMB (but UPnP). Unfortunately, UPnP sucks even worse on Boxee than SMB does on Vista.

See if using the trial version of Network Magic (install on your PC) helps at all.

    Default Network Magic

After Installing Network Magic, the issue is resolved. Thanks for that tip. Now that everything on the boxee is working like a dream, I am quite impressed with the way it displays my files. Thanks to all again.
