Its all in black and white and simple google search for custom wd tv live firmware brings you too it.

Seriously no major company like wd is going to let this keep going on if they don't wish it.
They could easly stop it from happening but instead they let it happen and its done nothing but improve thier own firmware.

New ideas, code improvements and atracts others to the box.

It doesn't take a genius to see why they have left them alone to do there work since it does nothing but benfit them.
Believe this is a little too..well - naive.
...the reason they haven't locked down the box is because no content providers had demanded it until this point.
Q: Does WDLXTV support the WDTV Live Streaming?
A: No, and it probably never will. WD are encrypting a significant portion of the firmware of this new device, which means we can't do much with it, unless you want a WDTV missing nearly all its online services, including Netflix.
Homebrew is a dying business in the WDTV streamers

It scares me sometimes how little people do any research before commenting.

It would be naive to believe such a foolish statement like that though.

Seriously go do some reading before making comments like that.
The box is locked down fine but the modders requested and got the go ahead from WD itself as long as the stock code remained untouched.

As for home brew dieing i guess you may want to tell the manufactures who are increasingly backing it now that its dieing i am sure they like to know.

Hell Asus has their routers going Ddwrt simply because it makes more sense and people asked for it.

Just because boxee is blind to what they could be doing and how it can help them doesn't mean others are.

Its the first rule of business that you make sure your customer is happy, because if he isn't he shall go somewhere else.

Companies are increasingly taking advantage of this now as it costs them nothing and increases the products viability.

I could name twenty other companies off the top of my head that we deal with who are doing this.

You seem to have this strange idea that these companies have to lay the code out there to anyone.
They don't they just need to keep a dialogue going and give out info they deem safe.

Seriously guys do your homework before making such foolish and naive comments like this.

All this is a moot point, it's extremely unlikely (as in never) that the Box will ever be officially opened up by Boxee.

Its little better on the pc.
Browser still behaves the same and on the box which means crashing freezing.Scanning and over all response at times still slow and this is on a massively powerful pc.
Quite disappointing but not unsurprising.New UI is nice but what good does it do us if it crashes and freezes.
I opened the web once and it froze on the first page.

    Sad but true.

The mentality behind it is hard to understand but who knows maybe dlink got them tied up.

It's not hard to understand, Netflix and Vudu more than likely require it. The same way "app signing" became a requirement once the Netflix app was released for the Boxee Box. The same way that Neflix, Vudu, and Pandora don't want their apps on the desktop version of Boxee without some stringent (I'm assuming onerous) DRM requirements/implementation.

It's the price Boxee has had to play to go where they want to which is providing access to premium content to get a small chunk of change every time anyone rents or buys content from them.

    Angry What now?

Does anyone know if boxee is planning to release a bug fix update for this useless mess they just dumped on us? I have to say I'm more upset about the (once again) lack of info then anything else. The HTPC crowd continued to support boxee while waiting for the promised new version and what we got was a slap in the face with the "last version" statement AND... a complete insult with the lack of a viable piece of software. Has anyone considered keeping 1.5 on their computer in the current state? Yes, it's free. No, they don't owe me a thing. Those facts are clear but, please, please, don't insult me with this garbage and then just walk away.

Signed... Very, very close to pissed off.

I think they're planning on providing a bug fix release but as to which bugs and when, I don't know.
