Default Boxee Sucks - Network works then doesnt work

Why is it that if I plug in the lan cable it wont connect, yet its connected before, so i then have to use wireless, this boxee is nothing but trouble, and dlink are starting to give me the wits about this device.

What make/model router are you using ?? Try to assign manual DNS 8.8.8.8 on BoxeeBox under Settings > Network If that doesn't help please open a support ticket on support.boxee.tv .

Ask for help and we will try to work you though it. Be nice.

After plugging in the cable, go into settings and set it to wired. All my boxes work just fine by plugging and then setting. Especially if you have your router set to auto DHCP.

As last poster asked, give router info. Also, give info on your current boxee firmware. More details about how it worked before and not now is to vague....so more info on what when where and how will go a long way in helping us help you fix your sucky boxee box.

But it doesn't work perfect, Samba shares support is very poor on the Boxee and gives lots of trouble. I have to reboot my server every few days to get Boxee to connect, for no reason. My XBMC HTPC works perfect everytime.

The real reason is that the latest GPL for Samba version 3 doesn't allow it to be used in proprietary locked down systems (ala Apple and Boxee), therefore the Boxee team use a problematic hacked version of Samba 2. The latest OSX Lion also has the loads of Samba problems, they use their own proprietary hacked version 2.

Release the code and open the box Boxee team, the future of Boxee is doomed if you don't

Sounds like a router problem to me.
Router model and router firmware version might be helpful.

I've been streaming wireless for over a year with very little problems. When I was having issues, it was my Cisco/Linksys WRT-310 router. I've since replaced it with a DIR-645 and have had zero issues.

I'd have to agree - I've had 2 BBoxes since the 1st release shipments over a year ago and I've had only one memorable SMB issue that was resolved very quickly

Both BBoxes are running on a wired Gb net. and both can stream 'many' Tbs of BD ISOs and BD MKVs without issue (excluding one title that I've confirmed others are also having an issue with)

I'm pretty sure that there are many more BBox owners who are not having the sharing/connection issues mentioned here on the forum (compared to owners who are) - and it's probably safe to say that there are 'many' BBox owners who don't even know this forum exists because they are not experiencing issues with their BBoxes -- it would be very interesting to see the total number of BBox' sales compared to the total number of registered forum members which is currently ( Members: 130,430, Active Members: 8,178 ) - and keep in ming the total forum members is tabulated from sometime in the middle of 2008, over 2 years before the BBox was 1st released/shipped - and I'm sure the total amount of 'Active' members is important here because it most likely represents either the number of BBox owners looking for help with resolving an issue - and, just as it states "Active Members" could also be the forum members who are not really having issues with their BBoxes, but are simply "active members" offering to help others with problems

So, if you subtract whatever the total # of 'helpful/active members' might be from the total # of all Active members... as Mr. Spock would say... "it logical to conclude that there is a very small ratio of BBox owners who are having issues, compared to the total # of BBox's sold"

Even if the total # of active forum members was 10, 15 or even 20,000 (x3) - I'm sure that # would be pale in comparison to the total # of BBoxes sold world wide in 34+ countries

OK, for those who don't agree with that 'logic' - I just put on my 'Flack jacket' - so "let 'er rip"

I'd agree with the data I've seen, GMD. Most forum posts are the rarer customer's with a trouble. Some are with common setups, but most are odd or one off setups that cause trouble.

We must have realistic expectations here, ....really. One box trying to connect everybody's everything devices with everything networks and everything servers, blah blah blah. No device is going to be perfect with everything, everywhere, everyhow right out of the box. That....would be.....Un-Realistic.

So, instead of bitching, moaning, ranting, spewing personal agendas and generally negative cheap shots , which I personally don't get paid to listen to and disregard the thread entirely.., lets get your setup info and try to work through it. That's what the OP'er asked for and what we're all here for, right?

Otherwise, we all have better things to do. Keepin' it real.

Thanks for the reply. So I have it set to wired and when I update it says fail. I have a PlayMax router from Belkin, have had it for quite a while and had no issues in the past. I don't use the DNS side as I don't understand how to set that up. If thats the best way then yes I would do that with help along the way.

    My setup:

From computer to router - Lan Cable
From Router to Powerline - Lan Cable
From Boxee to Powerline - Lan Cable

Now in the past I have been able to successfully connect without any issues direct to the computer on the wired. Only after doing that latest update I have not been able to connect to the computer.

Everything is shared correctly and yet still won't connect, so leaves me stumped on what to do.

Sorry for the rant in the first first, still love Boxee. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Have you tried a power cycling of all network devices (power them off in the correct order) starting with the BBox and going back to your router - then power them on in reverse order, giving each device time to completely power up

Yes. I have also reset the Boxee and removed all traces of me connecting to it and restarted the setup and still have the same issue.
