    Default Streaming Movies problem..

    Howdy,
So, last night the wife and I started to look around the Boxee com app more now that we are setup. Playing movies that are ripped to the library, no problem, playing movies that we have d/l’ed, no problem. Streaming movies, we ran into a problem.

We tried streaming from Nav X (Cowboys and Aliens) and it wanted to buffer every few seconds. Tried going to a movie site without going thru Boxee, same prob, so I’m thinking my connection may be the problem, but I don’t know. Below are some speed tests I ran……is my problem going to be my speed/connection…or is it something else?

    Basic comp specs are:
    AMD Athlon 64 x 2 dual Core processor 4200+
2.20 Ghz, 2.00 GB of RAM

    Video card is:
    NVidia GeForce GT 430
    1024 MB DDR3

    Speed tests:
    Speedtest.net, ping 25ms, download 6.16 Mbps, upload 0.71 Mbps
Speakeasy.net, to Chicago, download 5.35 Mbps, upload 1.06 Mbps
    Dslreports.com, to Chicago, ping 38ms, download 5305 Kb/s, upload 1025 Kb/s
    Bandwidthplace.com, download 5.96 Mbps, upload 1.06 Mbps

Most likely an issue related to the source of where that movie is/was hosted. There's a general Navi-X support thread here: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=18376

The Vudu app allows you view trailers for free and I believe test your connection for free as well. That might be a better indicator of your ability to stream from online sources.

And last but not least here are connection speed recommendations from Boxee/Vudu (good for Boxee software as well as for the Boxee app): http://support.boxee.tv/entries/1754...nnection-speed

Troubleshooting Guide for Buffering or Streaming Issues in Navi-X

The answers you seek should be in my troubleshooting guide.

Also, please post in our thread Darcilicious next time when the issue occurs in Navi-X. Thanks.

I have been using the Boxee Box since it was first introduced and the Boxee software on my MacBook before that. It's a great product, but I too have run into numerous Navi-X issues that have been subsequently fixed or changed in firmware updates.

I am currently running my Boxee Box with firmware 1.2.2.20482 and this is what happens when I stream a video in Navi-X. I select the video and have to wait at least 10+ sec. for the video to begin. The video will play for upwards of 1-3 min. and then buffer. The video will begin from where is left off and then buffer again and continue throughout the video. If I scan through the video to another time stamp, the video buffers quickly and begins playback okay. Then the buffering begins again within 1-3 minutes and continues throughout playback.

I have tried previous versions of the Boxee Box firmware that I found in the Boxee Box forums and they have fixed the buffering issue. With Boxee Box firmware 1.0.4.17248, Navi-X videos begin instantly when selected. The problem with this earlier firmware version is that a new problem arises. Video scanning is impossible to manage. If a video disconnects or I stop the video in the middle of streaming, then I have to watch the video from the beginning. Scanning to a time stamp causes sync issues with the audio and video and as you can tell from this post I have no patience in trying to adjust the audio offset settings while watching a video.

Until now, I have been very happy with my Boxee Box and how it plays with other apps, but I am seriously disappointed in the lack of understanding with this problem on this Navi-X buffering issue.

I read the post below from iRoNBiLL in the forum and I would like some additional information if possible. Thanks.

"The most stable version of Boxee firmware was the version before they put in the python sandbox for Netflix and WalMart. My system ran without lagging at all before then. Afterwards... if I press buttons too fast in Boxee or an app, my Boxee Box freezes. I'm still pretty mad Team Boxee didn't account for the python sandbox before they shortened up the system resources on their product, but what can you expect from such little foresight? Certainly not greatness!"
