MusicBrainz - Automatic Music Identifier and Scraper

No longer a need for correctly tagged music files. Very interesting acoustic fingerprinting code and API for music files, free and open source, (operated by The MetaBrainz Foundation, a non-profit corporation), very popular, and already has a cross-platform library (libmusicbrainz), would be great to have it built-into Boxee (and XBMC) so that it was used by the scanning process when building the database for the music library.

Sounds like a good idea. However while using iEatBrainz to search the MusicBrainz database for proper tags, it doesn't always find the correct album. What I mean is while I'm looking for it to find the original album the song was on it usually finds greatest hits or other compilations. While it's easy to change, with a large number of files it can get pretty ridiculous.

Hiya, folks. While searching for something entirely unrelated (but related to Boxee, of course) I came across this thread and felt I should reply (even though this is a somewhat ancient thread), as I have been a huge fan of MusicBrainz since I first saw it in use in the Amarok music player on KDE 3 under Linux. (If that last sentence sounds like total gibberish to you, you can easily Google Amarok, Linux, and KDE to find out what I'm talking about.) While I would love to see MusicBrainz support in Boxee, I suspect it's technically unfeasible due to (as PHermas previously pointed out) it not always being entirely accurate in what it finds for any given individual track.

However, do not despair, folks! There IS an option still. There is an official MusicBrainz tagging tool called Picard which does a fantastic job of not only tagging, but also organizing and renaming tracks by album into a nice neat folder structure which happens to work great when Boxee is pointed at the top level folder. This tool is available (as far as I know) for all three major operating systems, so you should be able to download and use this tool on whatever your favorite OS is. As a side bonus, it's not limited to just MP3 files, but also works with .ogg (and I suspect other formats as well) which Boxee plays just fine as far as I've seen thus far on my own machines.

I hope this information is helpful to anyone looking to tidy up and properly tag their music collection for use in Boxee.
