Default Boxee Box or HTPC running Boxee App?

I am debating between a Boxee Box or building an HTPC and running the Boxee software (among others) for accessing streaming media from the internet (and my home network).
Boxee Box is around $200, not sure what I can buy/build and HTPC for...
I am a techie so playing around with an HTPC would not be an issue (altho my wife may get frustrated while I get things sorted out...)

Suggestions on which way to go and an HTPC recommendation if that is the preferred method?

Shows I am looking for are ones like House, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Fringe, NHL and MLB games and maybe some movies (get a subscription to NetFlix or something)...

Ultimately, I would like to drop our sat service and strictly use one of these methods...

    Thanks

There isn't a simple answer, as there are advantages to both. Just now, the box has newer software. However, if you use the computer approach, you have greater flexibility. And, if things go all turnip-shaped, and Boxee disappears, you at least have something functional to show for it, IMHO.
    Dedicated computer
    dual core AMD
    Windows XP
    nVidia graphics card
    6TB internal storage
    2GB RAM

I think you should take a wait and see attitude and see if, or what and when Boxee releases updates to the PC/Mac/Linux distros.

The other distros are sitting at .9 beta while the CE devices distro is sitting at 1.2+ with major differences between the 2. Boxee said this fall with an update to the other distros but there is reason to question that with the issues they are having currently on the Boxee Box between 1.1 and 1.2.

My wife and I only use our boxee box. I want a HTPC, wife likes the BB but when I think about it a HTPC is only really better for web browsing. I don't really need that on my TV. I have a laptop, desktop, android phone in my pocket. If I really want to look at a few websites I just use my phone mostly.

Simple answer, test the software and see if it works for you. You don't have to build a new box just to test, use a spare or a laptop or whatever you have to see if it fits your needs. Then decide. You won't build a good box new for less than $200 but you might prefer it over the box. Or not.
