Thumbs down painfully slow loading of local movies

I just got my Boxee box today, and got all of my sharing set up. When I go to select a movie to watch, it takes like 5 minutes for the "play" menu to show up. After hitting play, I let it do it's thing, but it never did load. I set my screensaver to come on after 10 minutes, so it took that long before I decided to stop and try again. Before typing this I hit the back button to go back to the movie list. It was hanging for a few minutes there, and I was almost going to get up and hard restart. On the one computer I am sharing from right now, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Why is this machine failing and how can I fix it?

how's your boxee connected to the network? how's the sharing machine connected to the network?

My Boxee is wired into the router, and my computer is wireless. The wireless adapter on the computer is saying that its speed is 54.0 Mbps. It's a DW1501 Wireless-N card that's in the computer. The router is a Linksys WRT400N.

First of all you need to confirm if this is a wireless issue.

Sounds like you are limited to 802.11g Speed of 54mpbs. Bummer

You ought to look into why that is.

It could the distance and that is the best it can do. Which would explain your issue a bit. Wireless g sucks at this sort of thing.

For a test to make sure it is in fact the wireless causing the problem I''d plug your computer directly into the router for a test.

So if you are still having the problem with both your computer and your BB wired then at least you know it's not the wireless and now you know to look else where.

So you need to narrow this down a bit. Doing everything wired is your best bet if possible.

Also, what service are you using? SMB, NFS, UPnP, etc ?

SMB is not working well for many people at the moment. So I'd try NFS. And UPnP is basically broken too, files not being added to the library, missing thumbnails, etc.

I tried on another wireless laptop close to my router (since the main computer I am using is a desktop), and changing the settings on my router to broadcast in G, N and mixed didn't make any difference. So, the distance doesn't affect it from what I can tell. The signal is also full bars except once in a while when it goes down one.

I am using SMB. I tried this with a friend's Boxee (she is also using SMB) and it works flawlessly. The videos load within seconds on hers. I didn't do anything different on hers (that I know of).

Could some of this be related to the router? Most of the problems I ever have with networking has to do with my router. I hate networking. Also, does the changing of IP addresses on the PCs affect SMB? How do I configure NFS?

    Hey,

Very well could be, you could try exchanging your router with another one if possible?

If not, you could try resetting your router to factory defaults; normally this is done by pushing the "reset" button on the back side of the router.

The IP addresses really do NOT matter as long as you are NOT creating any sort of conflict. That is, as long as all devices on your network are getting a unique IP address then it really does not matter.

Well, Windows (client versions) does NOT come with an NFS server. So you would need to find one that works well with BB. Personally I do NOT use NFS so someone else would have to help you there.

That being said, I know a lot of people have had success with haneWIN NFS Server @ http://www.hanewin.net/nfs-e.htm .

    Take Care,

    Will

Being stuck at 54Mbps is definitely a contributor to the problem, but not the main culprit. Before I switched to wireless N (5GHz band), I could stream just fine over wireless G but it was a little slow.

So here's the problem. Your wireless card does not support the 5GHz band for wireless N. If your router is set to use the 5GHz band exclusively, you won't get wireless N speeds.

Having said that, I can't imagine that's why it's being so slow for you. As I mentioned before, I had no problems streaming over wireless G minus the slightly longer buffering times (maybe 30 seconds at the most).

We know the Boxee Box can handle streaming of large files just fine and that router should be able to handle the network traffic without breaking a sweat, so that's most likely not the problem.

If you're running Windows 7 you most likely have a fairly new computer with decent hardware, but you're not transcoding anyway so it doesn't have to be super powerful.

Please don't be insulted, I know you're not an idiot. But have you tried restarting the Boxee Box, the router and your computer?

I had a similar problem at one time where it would take forever to do anything but it after restarting the Boxee Box I didn't have any more problems.
