It's available now, but you must have the Boxee Media Manager installed on a W7 (Vista should work) or OS X computer.

I don't seem to recall reading that the current generation BB would be able to handle real-time transcoding of video files (and therefore stream from the BB). Would one of you guys who apparently saw such a claim please provide a link? Thanks!

The only way to play your content that is connected by HDD to your BB to the iPad is how Darci explained ..add a BMM onto a PC/Mac and then use BB as a NAS and mount onto the computer and let the BMM read it.

So the boxee iPad app adds absolutely no functionality over something like Plex's media server? That's a pretty big disappointment. Considering how much more mature Plex's implementation is, boxee has some work to do on this.

This would be a nice feature.

FWIW I have the XBMC app installed on my iPad and it can play MKVs at 1080p directly over my 802.11n wifi with no transcoding.

So I imagine if you had a Boxee running SMB you could share out the videos that way and have the iPad play them directly?

I don't see how. Unless you can run an SMB client on the iPad. The only media the iPad app knows about is that being served by BMM.
