Thread: Omg! No internet!!!

    Default Omg! No internet!!!

I love what I've seen so far with Boxee, best interface of any media center, and I've been looking for a solution for a LONG time!

However, I do have a big problem... I often take a portion of my video collection on my laptop to play while on the road... sometimes I don't have internet access... OMG! I know, how tragic!!!

Anyway, AFAIK Boxee makes you login to use it...

So while I'm on the road I have to play my movies through the OS interface by double-clicking on files in the folders... I'd really love to be able to use Boxee while not on the internet... Like have a local account that doesn't use any of that internet streaming features and just allows me to use Boxee to sort through and play movies I have on my local hard drive.

So far, this is one of my only two complaints with using Boxee, which is amazing, because I have a very clear idea of perfection and have had tons of problems with the other media centers.

When you sign in with no internet, Boxee simply warns you that some features will not work... But you can still sign in.

    Duh! lol!

I just assumed I couldn't login because it was asking me for the username and password I entered online when signing up for boxee.

The screen really fooled me into thinking it had to authenticate to the server on the internet, and I hated that idea, I mean, what if Boxee disappeared from online, but I still wanted to use it to play my home movie collection?

ok, well, i'll just chalk that one up to my bad.

Perhaps we should have a 'Sign in offline' check box at the login page. Make it clear that you CAN sign in offline.

boxee is open-source... if boxee.tv inc stopped being, we would just fork boxee, and remove/change the 'boxee.tv' dependencies.

i run boxee 0.9.20 on: ubuntu 9.10, windows xp sp3 (virtual machine), windows 7 and a neuros link hacked to all hell.

what super powers does a 'super mod' have? the 'super ban'... that, and laser vision.

I just setup Boxee on the computer in my living room and we couldn't login, so we couldn't use it at all!!!

Boxee does allow you to use it if you don't have internet access, but only after logging in the first time and creating your profile (you MUST have internet for that).

I'd much prefer you be able to use Boxee without internet access. Many of us will use it just to play our videos that we have on our PC connected to the TV, and won't want to run an internet line up there.

I believe the thinking behind this is to stop people outside the alpha from using the software. You need to sign in the first time to ensure you actually have an account.

I assume that in the jan 8th build, as it's going public, this is no longer required.

On the other hand, an initial sign in may be required to set up particular features of boxee....

I found this thread when searching for a way to use boxee without signing in to begin with... In other words, how do I install boxee on a machine that does not have internet access (even for an "initial sign in" like you say). I can get boxee there with a thumbdrive, but... you see my problem?

Is boxee ever going to do away with this requirement?

Is there a way to remove the dependencies on boxee.tv inc myself?

If you ever want to use the social aspects or Netflix then the server side will be required.

In the end Boxee is free software and the only way the developers can get some cash is to show how many accounts are active for potential investors. You don't have a problem with the developers of the free program you are using to make a buck or two off of their sweat and tears, do ya?

As this is open source I am sure that user customization will be down the road. You just will have to wait for the Beta completion for the tweaks to begin in earnest.
Running latest Boxee Beta version on:
    ATV v3.0.2 (via atvusb-creator) http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/
    Macbook Pro2.1 (10.5.8)
    Mac Mini (10.6.2)
    iMac (Core i7) (10.6.2)
    - Windows 7

    1. Install Boxee on a machine that has internet, and set-up your account.
    2. Exit Boxee.
    3. Copy everything in UserData
    4. Install Boxee on the machine without internet.
    5. Replace the UsedData folder on the new machine with the configured one.
    6. Launch Boxee. It will give you the option to login to your local profile.

Note: Boxee it pretty useless without internet access. I would recommend XBMC for your needs, as they are outside the scope of Boxee.
