Doctor Who - 2005 and 1963 - Build 0.9.23.15885

Hi everyone,

Specific issue this. It's been fixed in the Boxee box now they've gone to 1.1, but I thought I'd make up a specific thread to see if anyone out there has sorted it in the current build on OSX prior to that fix being issued.

I'm not expecting a build for OSX to be available anytime soon given the radio silence since September 2010 so need to find a workaround with what we have.

Simply put, Doctor Who (2005) and Doctor Who (1963) I cannot get to coexist.

I've got 50 or so 2005 and post series videos and 168 x 1963 videos - I can't get both sets to appear.

Has anyone found a naming convention for them both that works side by side?

Currently;

Doctor Who (1963) - SXXEXX - Title
and
Doctor Who (2005) - SXXEXX - Title

brings up the 2005 series only.

Going in and detecting a 1963 file identifies, but doesn't display the file.

I've tried variations, too many to list here, but am interested if anyone has got it to work and what the naming conventions that worked are.

If you don't mind - please don't post with suggestions unless you've tested them and they work for you (in other words, if you have Doctor Who files already working side by side in the same build - or a parallel build). I don't mean to be ungrateful, but I'd just like to know if there's a confirmed way to have both series working, not invest more time testing, It's been over 3 months!

And I know it works on the Boxee box!

The file naming convention you are using seems fine. Here are some steps you can try. I've used these on the Boxee Box before the issue was fixed on there and they worked. I'm not sure if they'll work in 0.9.23.15885 but it's probably worth trying anyway.

1. Clear the media database.
2. Use Files to browse to an episode of Doctor Who (1963) and manually identify it.
3. Repeat step 2 with an episode of Doctor Who (2005).

After doing this both the old and new show should appear with the single manually resolved episode in each. Once Boxee has completed re-scanning the sources the remaining episodes should appear.

It's a massive media database, takes a long time to rebuild. My usual issue is something like this fixes Doctor Who, but kills something else - Mr. Show and the Mr. Men usually!

Scanning now, seemed to remove the 'identify video' from some of the files...the ones it was naming perhaps?

Will post in the morning as to whether this worked.

The identify button sometimes disappears from the popup when selecting a video if Boxee is loading the thumbnail image while the popup is displayed. The button normally reappears if you close the popup and reopen it.

Results of a few attempts at your method of manually identifying a file first Steve;

It's an improvement - resulting in the thumbnails for both series being listed, which is a step on - but it doesn't address the underlying issue.

Following your method, we get the classic series (1963) files are all shown under their thumbnail (as before), but the new (2005) series only lists the episode chosen to be manually identified and the last listed episode (in this case Doctor Who (2005) - S06E07 - A Good Man Goes to War (1).mp4).
Anything earlier is completely ignored, as before.
These 'lost' files are not listed under 'unidentified' or anywhere else I can find (so, for example, they're not picked up under 'Alvin and the chipmunks' which seems to be Boxees way of displaying files it undentifies and can't file properly sometimes).

If you browse to the 'lost' new series(2005) files with the explorer and manually identify them, they are identified with series and number, but do not then appear under the thumbnail for the new series or appear in unidentified files - as before.

BTW The 'identify' button doesn't come back when closing and reopening the popup in the early part of the method, as far as I can see.
It's simply not there for some files.

I had about 4 or 5 goes at wiping the media database and trying the method with different files from the new series (so a files from Series 1 from the 2005 set and then Series 2 and then series 3 and so on), to see if I could get a different result, but this is repeatable.
I also tried the thumbnail popping in and out each time - but that also is repeatable, some files simlpy don't have it appear. (It does seem rather random, I'm wondering if it's because at the point of selection, Boxxee is scanning the file? It's not really an issue I want to focus on either way)

MyMovies4 at http://www.mymovies.dk also has some issues with similar types of titles... For example, I have the same problems with the Get Smart franchise:

Get Smart:

• "Get Smart (1965)" as TV Series
• "Get Smart (1995)" as TV Series
• "Get Smart, Again" as TV Series
• "Get Smart (Blu-ray)" as the Movie Release...

I have found that the simplest way to deal with it is to create the title in MyMovies v4, get the proper MetaData, link the the proper source files, then export the metadata in XBMC Format so that the .NFO Files are used to identify the titles...

MyMovies v4 has gotten significantly better at how it handles titles when it comes to tv series and moves though... Sometime after build v4PR5 there must have been a lot of changes made to the ID methodology...

BTW: If you Turn on SYSLOG and set it to DEBUG Level, then point the Destination to a Linux box or PC running something like WinSyslogd then you will get a much more detailed explanation of how the title is being matched...
