Default Initial setup help please :)

    Hi,

After a lot of online research I decided to spend $200 on a Boxee... I read the instructions and it looks very straight forward.

But when I try to connect to my wifi using the boxee setup guide, I select my router name, enter my password (which is correct, I have checked twice) but the next page shows "Wireless network was connected, but Boxee can't connect to the internet".

I have added the Boxee's MAC address in the mac filtering section on my router.

Is there a firmware update that is available? How do I check my current firmware version? Can I do a firmware update by connecting the boxee to my laptop?

I was really excited about getting this going but I've obviously missed soemthing.

Thanks! any help would be great!

Make sure you read this thread and then this one.

How to manually update from USB.

Let us know if nothing in there gets you going, and respond with as much information about your network setup as you can manage (router model, WiFi settings, etc.)

Ok so my settings are all ok and i just tried to upgarde the boxee via usb but when i power it up by holding the powerbutton 6-10 secs the boxee logo doesn't turn orange like the instructions says. Anyway I plugged the USB thumbdrive in with the .iso file and selected Upgrade from USB and it says "No USB Driver or Upgrade file found".

I also tried leaving the file name as what it was when the file downloaded. Tried changing the file name to boxee.iso, and tried changing the file name to just boxee. but no luck its still not recognisng that there is a usb device plugged into the boxee or that there is an upgrade file on the thumbdrive.

Does it have something to do with the logo not turning orange?? THats the only thing i can think of becuase the instructions are so simple but its just not recognising the thumbdrive or the iso file.

This is taking so long to setup I thought it was supposed to be easy :/ looks like this might be going back to the store next week..

    Edit:
Ok so after a bit of googling i have found out that i needed to show hidden file ext for known file types and have correctly renamed it boxee.iso. now when i go into upgrade by usb it says Operation failed, error code 0x314.

    Edit:
SUCCESS!! I downloaded it again and now its just finished upgrading! Fingers crossed it fixes the wireless and internet connection issue!

    Edit:
Oh crap! Now its not recognising my wifi network password! it says Unable to setup wireless network, please check your password and try again. My password is correct, have entered it 3 times. its all letters and numbers no symbols. its 18 characters, is it too long? i don't know what you want from me Boxee!! what is it i'll give it to you!!!! just work!!

I tried changing it to dog but it says i need at least 8 characters. I have put an 8 digit number and still get "unable to setup wirelss netowrk, please check your password and try again".

    Hmm, no idea then

I was using this for testing, 12345678, before I got everything pretty much correct and then upgraded to a harder password.

make sure all your networks have the same password. try to re-enter the password in your router, save and reboot it

YAY!! it worked!! Its all connected and going now!!

do you mind telling me how i wirelessly stream movies from my external hdd thats connected via usb to my laptop? this is what i was told it can do but i can't figure it out. i went into files and movies but theres no option to look at my laptop files to select my external hdd.

Thank you so much you have been a lot of help!

    edit:
I just searched a bit more on teh forums and when I go into files i can see my computer so when i click on it it asks me for a username and pwd, i tried my login for my laptop, my boxee un and pw. it doesn't accept either. what password is it after?
I have also set file sharing for all the folders that i want to share on my local network.

    edit:
ok so followed this youtube tut http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v...vq=hd720#t=123 and you'll never guess... IT WORKS!!
So its now 2.25am and its all fixed and i'm going to bed happy!
glad i have it all setup.. but to the person who said it was a "simple plug and play device" i hate you but i'm very happy its working now!
