Default Streaming DVD collection. My how to. And a bug to report...

    All:

I'm using the Boxee Box to stream my DVD collection in original DVD quality. Seeing as the format is untouched, I would hope that many modern devices (receivers, TVs, Boxee Box (anyone?)) would upscale to 1080p as they would when playing the DVD disk.

I'm using DVD Fab 8 to copy the Main Movie only to my home PC. Files are in the 3 to 4Gb range. The output looks the same as the original DVD; A folder with the movie name, with a Video TS and Audio TS folder inside. The Boxee Box recognizes this fine, just as PCs, PS3 etc. do, but it obviously isnt compressed so it takes up a little space.
Install YAMMM and point it to the folder with the DVD files in it. Set it to retrieve all types of meta-data and artwork. Dont use the "Use sort titles" option, as it appears that the boxee box doesnt like that. YAMMM will take care of all the meta-data and artwork automatically, so the boxee box doesnt have to.
Share the movie folder. Right click, sharing, advanced sharing, add, everyone.
Add the shared folder to the Boxee Box and tell it to scan daily. All Movies should be detected along with artwork etc.

All works great except for one big bug (hopefully the mods are listening)...

When the scan is finished it always says 0 FILES FOUND, even though it found a lot of them!! The big problem here is that because this report fails, it DOESNT TELL YOU THAT THERE WERE ANY UNIDENTIFIED FILES. So you cant click on Unidentified files and easily fix them. You have to manually compare the complete list of movies it found to the list on your share to find any that the boxee box didnt identify correctly. This is really irriatating and seems like it should be an easy fix?

I'm interested to here how others are doing movie streaming, and if they are having better luck with different formats (like MKVs for example)? DO they have the same bug? The nice thing about the direct DVD rip (Mpeg 2) is that everything plays it.... including the PS3.

Another note for those streaming wirelessly. Make sure your router channel isnt full of interference from neighbors networks. Changing channel on the router can make a massive difference!

    !
This happened to me last night. I clicked on my share and said it just scanned 5 minutes ago and found 0 files. I went to my wall and nothing was there. Went to Files and there they were.

I just deleted the share, redid it and went to sleep. This morning, all looked fine.

The scanning process is very wacky I agree. Something or a combination of things causes it to glitch out.

Boxee's backend servers are definitely involved in the process and I think they get updated everyone once awhile and goof things up on our end Removing and re-adding the source folder and letting it rescan the next day usually fixes it, as bryan mentions.
