Is it possible to install boxee on an external Hard Disk, mount this onto the ATV2 and run Boxee from there ?

no - Its not a host usb.

An ios boxee client app might be a more feasible solution (like plexi).

ATV2 is not a computer, its an iOS device, a cell phone in a plastic box. As a result its very different from the ATV1 which was essentially a mutant Mac mini, in terms of extra capabilities that can be hacked onto it.

Perhaps the iPad Boxee app that is slated to be released this month will work.

That said -- even though XBMC runs, it certainly doesn't run well.
