    Hello,

New to the Apple TV world. Just picked up a first generation Apple TV off ebay and have it unlocked and running via the USB flashdrive method with atv-win 3

Also did the "Launcher update" within the new menu, rebooted... Still unable to load Boxee, said invalid directory of some sorts.

Ok, I've managed to get all but these steps above accomplished correctly:

I've uploaded the bottom Boxee link in your sig line and got that in the /Applications directory properly via Cyberduck
-even rebooted ATV but now getting a
"Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path:
    /Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee"
-Note, I've also downloaded the Boxee beta but have no idea what to do with it. It contains "DMG" files - don't laff, I'm on a Windows 7 system and don't have a Mac so can I do anything with this as I'm assuming I have to somehow extract it and update it to the /Applications - boxee directory ?

Also, the "Install FLash" under Nitro was also unsuccesful.

I do have XBMC up and running fine.

    Suggestions?

Make sure you copy the boxee.app (bottom link - unzipped) to the correct applications location, there are two !!!!!!!

"12. Download Boxee beta from my sig or from wherever you have it. Using an sftp app like cyberduck copy the unpacked boxee.app to the root applications folder - /Applications NOT NOT NOT ~/Frontrow/Applications....."

RUn Smart Installer in nito. Then try the flash download (make sure nito is ver 1.0).

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm at work right now so can't check some things but I did use "Cyberduck" and successfully get Boxee within the /Applications folder on the ATV per the bottom link in your sig. Again, I'm using a PC within a Windows 7 environment and the problem is that when I download the "Beta Boxee" you mention that is further up in your sig, and I unpack it, there is a (MacOS) directory of some sort and then a .DMG file and this is where I am stuck. What/where do I do with those files and place them to since you mention to use the "Boxee Beta" link? Maybe it is the unpacked boxee.app explanation in your instructions that I am hung up on?

The files I first mentioned from the bottom boxee link which I place successfully within the /Applications folder do resemble the XBMC directory correctly as per it's structure that is already in the /Applications folder and the XBMC does in fact work from the Menu/Launcher in the ATV so I don't understand why I am not able to get Boxee to work when I select it.

I am pretty certain I did run the Smart Installer in nito but I will double check and also check the version once home. I know everything else worked fine for me to get Nito and the previous steps mentioned as per your link, however, the "Install Flash" part fails and when I try it I get a real fast blink on the screen to a directory or something and then the error that it can't install flash (I forget the exact wording, I'll have to check that also once home and let you know if it is at all helpful).

Thanks again for the assistance with this issue and I hope to get it resolved!

I did this a while ago (infact I dont use boxee on my first gen anymore unless i have an issue with a certain codec !). The last link is the boxee.app file (NOT A DMG). Download that, copy it to the root applications folder. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

    Good luck

    Hi,

Yep. I did successfully get the "Boxee.app" from the bottom link and have unzipped & copied it to the root /Applications folder which when I double check, exactly matches the successful XBMC that resides in the same directory being /Applications and it executes fine on the ATV menu.

I'll further investigate once home, however, with everything setup this way, my ATV menu shows "Boxee" but when I select it, I get the:

"Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path:
    /Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee"

So this is where things seems to be messed up. And I guess I was confused as to the need to use the "beta boxee" link in your sig also? That is the one that ends up being the .dmg file when unzipped...

Lol - So frustrating. I bought this ATV 1st gen off a seller on ebay and it was supposed to be the 160GB version but ended up shipping me the 40GB one. He is working with me though with this issue and is willing to refund me $50 OR exchange it. I'm also starting to wonder if the unit might be defective since I seem to be hung up on getting the "Boxee" installed and have followed the directions to a T as far as I understand them.

No, its not defective. The problem is that boxee is not supported anymore on this platform. I think you need to make sure when you run smart installer that the recovery.dmg is downloaded (did it ?), then it will work. Boxee need bits (coreaudioframework) from the original Tiger OS (10.4.7 or 9) in order to run. If you didnt see the recovery download from smart installer, this is the cause.

In all honesty, I would not get hung up on boxee working unless you have a scrunched anus like myself (retentive is the key word !). XBMC is all you need for viewing pleasure. Add a crystalHD card and you have a 1080 streaming monster.

Hehe Actually that is my problem. I'm more put out that I can't get it to work than actually realizing if I even need "Boxee".

I'll do some more investigating once home and at the unit.

I did see the mention of adding the "crystalHD card" and I am considering that. The only downside is I would loose the "wifi" connection and that is how I have my Windows 7 desktop sharing a directory of movies with the ATV over the network using XBMC and that is really my goal. I guess I could still connect the ATV via an ethernet cable to my router and retain that ability?

I see the "crystalHD card's" are relatively cheap via amazon lately and I already bookmarked somewhere a Utube video which made the install look rather painless.

Welcome to all your suggestions here as I am brand new to the ATV

    Update:

Well I've really managed to screw things up now.

Seemed I was stuck at Nitro 0.9.5 no matter after running Smart Installer = same issue

Finally followed some steps here via ssh: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/NitoTV_Take_2

    Code:
    sudo mount -uw /
    sudo touch /.readwrite
    cd ~/Documents
    sudo dd if=/dev/disk0s2 of=recovery.dmg bs=1m
Managed to get the Smart Installer to run without errors.

Tried to update "Flash" = same error like it can't find a file (Screen blinks fast off so can't really tell what it's saying.)

At the bottom of Settings I believe in "Nitro" I now noticed a selection to (Update Nitro 1.0)

Did that and the unit rebooted.

Now everytime I try to scroll past the (Launcher) selection on the main menu in ATV, upon it trying to select/highlight Nitro, the whole system crashes with:

    An error occured.

Press Play/Pause to restart your Apple TV.

So I do this and it reboots with same issue. Even tried unplugging and re-powering to no avail.

No idea how to fix this now

I have borked and re-installed my 1st gen a hundred plus times, so instead of crunching command line, just do a fresh install (restore your atv etc etc). Its good practise. Im going to bork mine next week and retry my steps again (its been a while). I think your problem has been nito NOT installing the 10.4.7 recovery dmg. You can install it manually also, then run smart installer.

Start over, follow the steps to the T and post back.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. In the process of doing that.

Hrmm, Here's the thing. I just did the "Factory Restore" via the Apple TV Recovery accessed from the Volume - & Menu press...

And the damn thing is doing what it did when I first got it!

-Upon reboot, it's in a looping from the silver centered Apple screen and it blinks back to the menu options briefly down the right but goes right back to the silver Apple even whilst I'm trying to press the Play button or Menu button on the remote to make a selection.

-I remember it doing this quite a few times initially and was finally able to get it to stop after several (hard reboots) by disconnecting the power.

-So far I'm on my 2nd "Factory Restore" attempt tonight.

-I do get to the screen to input my wireless network key and am able to succeed at that but then it boots through the music and flashes "Connect to iTunes"....

Edit: Ok, I think nevermind to the above. As I was typing it out, this time I was able to hit the menu button and get in to the "Settings" section bypassing the iTunes bit (I guess). I don't even have an iTunes account...

I'm really beginning to think the reason I am not having any success with your tutorial is because I'm stuck doing this on a Windows pc.

-The patchstick creation process is different than as per the instructions on their website & the screencaps which all seem to point to using it on a Mac.

-I get no "Software" in the menu, just the "Launcher" with XBMC / Boxee (which don't work) / Downloads / Settings / About

-I'm now having an issue with Putty connecting at all to SSH so can't continue on with your instructions.

Bah, So much time... So ticked off at this...

Probably going to end up returning the ATV and going with a damn Roku box like I have in my bedroom... (sigh)
