    Default Software Menu Broken ?

I just noticed a possible issue with Software Menu on the atv 1st. Assuming you have the latest ver installed (Im running 1.0b1, updating to 1.0b2 does not work).

Up until a few weeks, when you go to SOFTWARE MENU>3rd Party>Check for updates, typically it would go out and look for updates to Nito etc (from which you could install, update etc). A couple of weeks ago, whenever I tried this, I get an error asking to restart the atv by hitting play/pause.

Ive borked and re-installed but its the same.

Anyone else getting this error ? Im wondering if the patchstick/ software menu has finally been broken.

If so, I will post a new method for installing nitoTV (manually).

    Feedback would be appreciated.

UPDATE: COULD SOMEONE RUN THIS ON THEIR ATV TO SEE IF THEY HAVE THE SAME RESULT (SEAN ??) thx

Wow, finally. I thought I was losing my mind. Thanks for the feedback. I can install nito manually via ssh, so I will add that to another post I started.

    Cheers bud.

UPDATE: It is indeed broken. I have this verified by multiple sources. If anyone wants it, I can post nito install instructions.

    Default INSTALLING from scratch

    1. Plug in the ATV and boot it up. If its a year or so old, you will be probably have ATV OS ver 2.x with a older version of boxee and XBMC. Or it is newly acquired from ebay etc.
    2. Pointing your ATV remote, press Menu and the minus (-) together until your ATV reboots and light flashes amber.
    3. Once it boots, select English and then Factory restore.
4.This will wipe what you have and create a fresh ATV with frontrow etc.
    5. Under Settings, select Update Software (spinning wheel).
    6. This may take a few minutes, but your atv will re-boot and Frontrow with look different (you now have ATV OS ver 3.0.2).
    7. Now we need to get a flash drive and create a patchstick. I recommend creating it on a mac. Download the following and follow the instructions to the T.

    http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Not all Flash drives work, so if you get a failure, try another patchstick.

    http://forums.boxee.tv/archive/index.php/t-1240.html

    8. Shut down the ATV (hard shutdown. Insert the flash drive and re-boot. Once finished, shut down ATV unplug flashdrive, re-boot ATV).
    9. If it worked, you will two new menu items, Software Menu and Launcher. SOFTWARE MENU IS BROKEN.
    10. Installing NITO - To activate the USB drive and afp sharing, you need nito. You will need to use terminal or puTTy to do the following;

    ssh -1 frontrow@AppleTV.local

    wget http://nitosoft.com/nitoTVInstaller_tt.zip

    unzip nitoTVInstaller_tt.zip

    cd "nitoTV Take Three"

    chmod 755 installme

    sudo ./installme

Or DL http://nitosoft.com/nitoTVInstaller_tt.zip to your mac, unzip, copy folder to frontrow directory, then SSH in via terminal/puTTy

    cd "nitoTV Take Three"

    chmod 755 installme

    sudo ./installme

    11. Under Launcher, download and install the latest launcher (3.2.5)
    12. Download Boxee beta from my sig or from wherever you have it. Using an sftp app like cyberduck copy the unpacked boxee.app to the root applications folder - /Applications NOT NOT NOT ~/Frontrow/Applications. You can launch boxee from Launcher at this point.
    13. Once done, in NitoTV, under Settings, Install Software, run SMART Installer. This will download the 10.4.9 recovery.dmg and copy it into ~/Frontrow/Documents/. This will enable the USB host drive and allow you to hook up an external HD/ flashdrive to the ATV via the usb drive.
    14. Once done, within Nito, Settings, Install Software, select install Flash.
    15. Once all this is done, in Software Menu, disable ATV OS updates (you can do this within Nito Also under Settings).
    16. At this point you can use SMB (samba) protocol to access the HD on your ATV. For networking to your ATV (the SMB part also works for the boxee box also), check the following post;

    http://forums.boxee.tv/showpost.php?...03&postcount=3

    16. At this point you should be able to hook up a mac journaled HD to the USB port of your mac and point boxee/ XBMC to it.[/QUOTE]

I want to thank Nigel for this update because indeed the thumb drive installer no longer installs nitoTV correctly and this is key to allwoing your ATV1 to correctly connect to USB drives and to update and install Flash. Both of which are necessary to really make effective use of your ATV1 and XBMC/Boxee as media players.

I had not needed to reinstall onto an ATV1 in a while.

    Real life saver. Thanks Nigel.

thanks very much for the post. On this step I am unable to upload boxee.app to /Applications as it's permissions are 755 and I'm receiving write errors. I tried to chmod the folder using an FTP program (logged in over SSH) and putty and the user "frontrow" doesn't have permission to do this.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    ssh in, issue;

    sudo mount -uw /
    sudo touch /.readwrite
    sudo sync

Thereafter you can issue chmod or use cyberduck to change permissions.

    Help Needed please!

    Hello,

New to the Apple TV world. Just picked up a first generation Apple TV off ebay and have it unlocked and running via the USB flashdrive method with atv-win 3

Also did the "Launcher update" within the new menu, rebooted... Still unable to load Boxee, said invalid directory of some sorts.

Ok, I've managed to get all but these steps above accomplished correctly:

I've uploaded the bottom Boxee link in your sig line and got that in the /Applications directory properly via Cyberduck
-even rebooted ATV but now getting a
"Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path:
    /Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee"
-Note, I've also downloaded the Boxee beta but have no idea what to do with it. It contains "DMG" files - don't laff, I'm on a Windows 7 system and don't have a Mac so can I do anything with this as I'm assuming I have to somehow extract it and update it to the /Applications - boxee directory ?

Also, the "Install FLash" under Nitro was also unsuccesful.

I do have XBMC up and running fine.

    Suggestions?
