If the documentation is clear about what the buttons on the remote actually do in the newer firmware, I don't think this will be the case. They'll simply live with the fact that like their DVD player, this device doesn't have its own volume.

People who use a single remote might be upset that they'll need to use two remote and everyone else (damn, it's so many people) will just continue to use multiple remotes. If this isn't greater than 70% of the market I'd be extremely surprised.

But, the functionality should be returned and an option created to "Lock volume at 100%" for people using external amplification and volume control.

    Thanks for moving this btw...

twistybox, its not the people who buy a new one with the new documentation (if there even is such a thing) - its people who buy the almost new one with the old docs. Or the people whose boxeebox has worked great through March and April, but when the mandatory auto-update-break-the-volume-control-May release comes out, and they're not forum users - THATS when the problems arise. For THEM, it IS a BUG. You watch. It'll happen.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I've already said my peace in the bug report and in email directly to the Boxee team on this subject.

At the very least I sincerely hope they give us an option in the settings menu to enable this...

FWIW, I haven't seen any posts asking that volume control be removed so the arbitrary decision to get rid of it is obviously one that indicates very poor direction.

Get the apps that won't conform (which I believe are all US centric anyway) to support it or come up with an alternative method to catch volume commands before being passed to the app. Shouldn't all Boxee core functions should be managed by Boxee, not the apps anyway?

How many people truly use a single remote? I use several harmony remotes and I still have to use multiple remotes for my devices like the Boxee Box that uses RF. I'd say the number of people that truly use only one remote is miniscule.
even here at work it's gotten so bad since they started putting BD players in some of the offices along with the HD sets, DirectV boxes, DVD burners, etc there are four or five remotes now and people keep complaining that they can't work anything. And then if you do setup a universal remote, they forget to charge it or they drop it and break it.

One opinion: up/down on remote could be used much better with something other than volume control, the current video playing interface needs improvement. I think it should accessible in the OSD menu.

Once I fire up my Boxee, I use a single remote. I use my universal remote for other devices, but it is nice to not have to use two remotes for the Boxee, and I'd like for it to stay that way. For those apps that don't adhere to the normal button mapping, maybe Boxee ought to ask them nicely to conform rather than remove a handy feature.

    Default Ever growing sadness

I grow more frustrated with my BBox... With every post I read. What is happening to BOXEE? I wish I would have read all of this before buying it. I was foolish to assume that they would give the same great product as I was using on my pc for e past 4 years.

Even funnier, I returned my apple tv because it was so closed... I said to myself, why not support that company I have been using for so long... Plus they are so OPEN... SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD, SAD.

It is okay for boxee to hack everything apple and microsoft to run boxee, but not for boxee users to run XBMC or variants of it's own software.

    FACT-
If you are not mad... You do not understand what has truly happened!

From all the tickets I've looked at on Jira, it appears this change is going to stick for the foreseeable future. I really thought with all the backlash that they would look more at fixing the application interactions with the up/down arrows rather than take the functionality away.

A few ideas to make things better for everyone.

Have a "volume + -" that at the top of every screen that can adjust volume. Also add this to the popup Video OSD and Music OSD.

Quickly get out a Boxee Box updated remote that has volume buttons on it and allow for some type of trade-in + $10 to get the newer remote.

The most simple that everyone has suggested. Make this change optional!

At the very least they need to add an option to enable some type of volume normalization so you aren't always reaching for the remote when moving between apps or when ads are played on web videos.
