Thread: We'd Like Our Volume Control Back :)

Default We'd Like Our Volume Control Back :)

I hope this ticket doesn't mean what I think it does. Why would you go from not needing any remote once the Boxee Box is powered on to needing two remotes to operate? With the many different volumes across the board for different programs and the large sweeping volume changes in different movies it's an absolute necessity to be able to change the volume from the Boxee Box remote. This will turn many people off from purchasing this device or continuing to support it if this is the case.

That's what it sounds like. That sucks. I was rather fond of being able to control the volume from the boxeebox remote.

Really? I always thought volume control was kind of stupid for a piece of tech like this.
Does your Blu-ray or DVD player or Tivo have volume controls? No.
The remotes for these devices have volume control but they are controlling the TV's actual volume not attenuating the signal being fed to the display.

I'd much rather see the up and down buttons re-purposed for functions similar to the AppleTV, ie, bringing up video or technical information, allowing skipping to chapters markers, etc.

Of course the BIG difference between my Blu-Ray/DVD player and the Boxee is that the Blu-Ray and DVD players are EASILY controllable by a universal IR remote, which many people have. The Boxee is NOT.

So if they are removing the volume controls, you're gonna either need to find a 3rd party IR remote(many average Joe's won't even know what to look for) or go double fisted with 2 remotes.

Just last night I received a seemingly random complaint from my zero-clue Boxee-user family that the playback of one of our ripped CDs didn't sound very good. A bit hissy, lots of noise in the background.

Turns out what'd happened was that the volume on Boxee had been turned right down, and therefore the volume on the 5.1 receiver turned right up to F#ING LOUD to compensate. Luckily no-one changed the inputs on the 5.1 to any other source, otherwise we might've had a local repeat of the Fukushima incident.

Now admittedly this was a pilot error issue ... however the pilot in question was in all likelihood a closer match to the Boxee target audience than to the subset of people who might understand why that particular combination of volume control settings might be problematic.

    So it's not a one-way street.

i was going to make a thread about this. i use the boxee remote volume control because that's best for my setup, where pc and boxee go into amplified speakers that don't have a remote. i also understand the other problems.

the best thing for both sides is to have an option for volume control. you can leave a comment on the jira thread in the first post. if you don't, there's a chance this will be lost in the next firmware.

    Default volume control

I had all kinds of volume related problems until I set the volume on the Boxee Box to max and just left it there. I now use the tv remote exclusively for volume and no more volume related complaints.

Same issue, different ticket with a different dev reply:

That is the reason for this change.

I always have both remotes next to me. I'm just used to it. I spent years with an AppleTV as my source so I got used to using the TV remote for controlling volume.
