    Default Youtube crashes Box

    Hi everyone,

i don't know whether this is known bug or it is related to my Box only, so I am just posting this for maybe some helpful information someone can give me.

I add some movie to a watch later list (youtube video) and than when I watch it for some time ( maybe 10 minutes ) it begins to stutter, than sometimes the picture stops moving and i can only hear sound. Maybe, just maybe, sometimes the picture comes back....but eventually everything stops, remote doesn't work anymore and it seems like the Box freezes / crashes. I always have to hard reset it or unplug the cord and start all over again.

I think in overall the Youtube playback is just horrible, it usually takes a lot of time to even begin playing and so on...but it always crashes after some time.

I am also having some problem playing my local movies. Almost all my movies are MKV format, but funny enough some play just fine, some stutter just a little bit and go back to normal - and some, when they begin to stutter, it just never ends.

I am pretty happy with my Box so far, but this is beginning to slowly irritate me.

So, i know about MKV playback problems and that lots of people are having it, but for Youtube Box crash...i don't know.
If anyone can share some info on this I would really appreciate it.

    Thanx

The most important detail: What firmware are you using?

How are you connected to the internet from the Boxee Box?

How are your MKV files connected/shared to the Boxee Box?

Where are you connected from (country)?

If you could post some YouTube movie titles that are crashing the box, that would let others try and re-create the problem...

    Hi,

i am currently at work so i can't give you exact firmware version, but it is the latest update through an official channel - that is, no release candidate updates on my box. I remember the update date is 13. January 2011.
I will post exact version when i come home.

My Box is set up with wireless connection (manually assigned IP address), through an access point and after that an ADSL router to the internet.
Wireless speed itself i don't think is a problem as all my movies and youtube etc... work perfectly OK on my notebook Boxee installation, and I use same network as described above...AP is in B/G/N mode, so N is working as far as i know.

My files are accessed through a file share on my desktop computer (Windows 7 64bit) and again, have no problems watching movies on same shares through a Boxee installation on my notebook.

Don't know why the country is important - but Slovenia it is.

Thanks again for helping me identify a problem.

I just experienced the same issue when watching a DC surf video based in Rio (don't know the actual title) in Lean Back.

Checked Jira and couldn't find a ticket directly relating to this issue but it's difficult to find anything with all the duplicates. Might open a new ticket sometime later tonight.

I'm coming back with some more info...

    Firmware: 1.0.3.17064
Movies I tried to watch via "watch later" > yotube or youtube leanback directly:
    - Zeitgeist Moving Forward (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytBfshwlws0)
    - Android Honeycomb Event (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfJuigJebRg)

I assume you are using the Boxee bookmarklet to Watch Later and not using the YT app.
I'll test them on my box and see.
But I'm running the new: New firmware RC available 1.0.4.17248

    Update:
So far - Zeitgeist Moving Forward is playing fine at 360p and 45 minutes.... via Youtube USA.
The - Android Honeycomb Event locked the box in under 5 minutes. Rebooting now....

The country does matter as YouTube has it's own versions for other countries. Also, are you using a VPN? What's your ISP speed. The list of variables can go on and on. Though, this has little affect on locking up the box, but does affect stream quality.

AS for mkv, there are sooooooooooo many codecs, encoders, and rippers. Some even use very old encoding methods that are somewhat obscure now. Mix all that together and boxee box is not set up to handle them all using the FFmpeg player it uses. Yeah, I know, It plays in VLC or MPC-HC right? Well, hopefully over time boxee can help with some of those lesser traveled options.

In the mean time, if you make your own MKV's, check out this very helpful How To.

I get the same thing. I can pretty much crash my Boxee Box 100% of the time using Youtube.

Youtube is also noticeably slower now, something is up.

Mine did this on a couple of beardyman vids earlier at 720p from my watch later list.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qciVXUHTN10

Did the whole slow down and freeze thing but the audio kept going... then a black screen.

Playing it again now after a reboot and all fine so far. Watched it a couple more times and worked both times, must have just been a hiccup
