More software and options available on a platform is better for the user, means more popularity for a platform.
A WD TV Plus costs only a 1/3 of a boxee box. I had one for testing, you can do with it what you want.
Cheers

Not to be a "Debby Downer," but we've covered this pretty extensively recently.![]()

Boxee's stance on this changed once protected content contracts were implemented i.e. Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu and more to come. Why? Because an open BBox would also open the protected content provider's property to copying and copy write infringement. Thus negating the the security and agreements of the signed contract.
So, in order for boxee to grow into a supreme content provider for all of us to benefit from, this had to be implemented.
If you want to mod boxee for personal use, install the "open" version on your fav install of linux, windows or Mac.![]()

This is not going to work if you sell your product outside of the US (like Europe for example?). No access to the System and no access to the premium content. Well thought out!Boxee's stance on this changed once protected content contracts were implemented i.e. Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu and more to come. Why?

Headweb is one example of premium content for Europe (Sweden) on the Boxee Box and as said, more to come. This is not going to work if you sell your product outside of the US (like Europe for example?).

The top products in the consumer space prove that wrong year after year though. Closed and simple products win every single time.
Here are a few for thought:

iPhone
iPad
Wii
Playstation
Xbox
Logitech Harmony Remotes
Again, I respect your wish, but you're looking in the wrong place. There are plenty of open boxes you can use to do whatever you want, the Boxee Box is not one of them. It is supposed to be a finished product, not a DIY kit. And sales will not suffer because of this. The industry at large has proven time and time again that this is what consumers want and that a tightly controlled product has the best chance to flourish so long as its developers put in the work/effort.

Manta TR1 IR Receiver for Boxee and HTPC - Use your Universal Remote with Boxee Box or XBMC HTPC, including Raspberry Pi
Also for Windows, Linux & Mac OS X: Windows Media Center, SageTV, JRiver Media Center, MediaPortal, XBMC, Plex, MythTV, etc.
Sweden != Europe. Fact is, Boxee is marketetd and sold with services which are not available. So what i've got is a player which can basically only play local content. There are much cheeper (and even more stable, my boxee box keeps crashhing in very fancy ways) solutions for that.
Cheers,

Haven't played around much with the browser eh? Or with RSS feeds? So what i've got is a player which can basically only play local content.
Sorry but there is web-based content you have access to. Premium services? Not so much. Yet.
(I'm not aware of any premium content providers that are European-wide -- what am I missing?)

Since the five time poster is reliving this topic, I'm moving it to the proper arena.
