Angry SOLVED: Stuck on Red Screen after Today's Firmware Update

    Update 02/06/11:

After extensive help from the Boxee team, this issue has been solved; at least for me. After manually installing the latest RC firmware (1.0.4.17248), I get no red screen issues using the switch. I power cycled everything in different orders to try to recreate the problem and none appeared. My compliments to the team for handling this problem promptly and professionally.

    Thanks again!

    Original post:

Downloaded the REQUIRED firmware update today. Boxee box sat on a red screen for 20 minutes. After that, I used the power button to reboot (held down 3 seconds or so, then pushed it again). Boxee box just goes to a red screen. After trying everything (disconnecting power for a few min, disconnecting HDMI while off, disconnecting HDMI while on, power cycling a few more times, etc) the boxee box booted to the initial setup menu with orange boxee logo (recovery mode?). After prompting me to download the new firmware AGAIN, it ended up right back at that red screen after the reboot.

    Any thoughts?

I am using a Monoprice HDMI switch (4x1) and a Samsung DLP TV.

I had issues updating as well, it sat at 0% for about 30 minutes a few times before I gave up. I ended up downloading the file manually and installing it via usb.

Not the same issue, but I just thought I'd add it as a possible solution. Just do a factory restore, and then boot to setup menu again (hold down for ~6 seconds) and update via usb instead of letting the box boot up all the way.

I just tried entering recovery mode to factory reset and manually update firmware per instructions HERE.

The red screen appears in recovery mode, as well. No way to navigate around and install firmware or anything else. Very frustrated.

I negated the HDMI switch and went direct. Trying to update firmware now.

Man, I keep seeing descriptions of problems like this that are caused during updates over the internet. It leads me to believe that there's some design flaw with the network update process. I've just seen it too many times now to continue to believe that's it's just isolated cases of somehow faulty or early-rev hardware.

I really do hate to say it, but for this reason, I'd suggest to everyone that they update their firmware manually via USB (as linked to above) from now on, at least until this gets worked out.

I read either on here or over at the AVSForums, that someone who was using an HDMI switch was having issues. When he went direct from Boxee to TV problem of "red screen" was resolved.

Removing the HDMI switch from the signal path resolved the problem. Unfortunately, now that I know what the problem is, I am more frustrated. I love my DLP TV, but it only has one HDMI input, hence the switch. I have to use a HDMI switch. It seems the HDCP is not passing properly.

    This is pissing me off.

    Hello,

I am having the same problem after today's update, except my Boxee Box has always been directly connected to my tv.

If I turn it on normally, it shows the loading screen then either goes to a solid red screen or shows nothing at all. Same thing happens if I hold the power button for 10 seconds. If I hold the power button for ~30+ seconds, the boxee box flashes green/red, and the tv shows the loading screen forever and nothing else happens.

I can't get into this recovery mode to try updating manually, and when trying to update originally, I don't remember it ever showing a progress dialog, etc, making me think it failed completely.

Red screen == HDCP negotiation issues. This usually happens when you have HDCP compatibility issues. Please post you specific equipment setup when reporting this.

I'm using an HDMI switch, and updated Firm today as well. No issues with HDCP passthrough. I'm using a cheap 5 to 1 switch from ebay. Ebay item number 310250305875 to be exact.. I just joined so i don't know the rules yet of posting links to other sites. otherwise i would have just posted the item here.

    I'm using a Mitsubishi Diamond WD-73831
