It really depends on what you mean by playing 1080p video. If you mean local content only the WD box does that and it is supposed to be buggy in its own ways, not have a free internet TV scraper worth mentioning.

Every head to head I've read between the WD box at $100 favors the Boxee at $200. Also your numbers for a working HTPC seem kind of low.

Wish I could buddy, here we don't have the super deluxe amazon money back garantee.

I had 1 week to return for money back, took some days to reach me, then after being so what happy with 0.9 plus reading all the potential this box had, posts of people like you pointing at the bug tracker/transparency, updates that were coming etc.. anyway you can guess were we stand by now

Okay... since we're no longer helping by answer technical questions and since the OP's initial question has been answered, moving this to off-topic. Cheers!

Boxee will get it together. Even if they don't, eventually someone will jailbreak the Box to run something else like XBMC on it.

I am not talking about any fancy i3/5/7 etc HTPC deluxe.

For the price I mentioned you can easily find older generation HTPCs that work just fine w atom cpus etc. and will play your HD content just fine.

A friend of mine just bought a Asrock ION 330HT, 229 euro new just had to add memory and HDD and it was good to go.
Boxee has no HDD so I didn;t compare that price.
Memory is very cheap nowadays: 2GB = 25 bucks extra.

While shopping I noticed other lower end HTPCs for those prices.

    Anyway this is offtopic.

As the owner of several Boxee like products from other manufacturers I have to say that Boxee has the concept of IPTV down far better than its competitors. I'm frustrated when something doesn't work and thrilled when it's fixed but even at it's worst Boxee is light years ahead of its competitors in terms of features and the sheer amount of material available for it.

$229 Euro = $305 dollars. $305 > $200. Without any memory, cheap or no. And I guess you are running a Linux OS for free then too right? Cuz I know Windows ain't free.

Also why not just buy your cheap HTPC and run Boxee on it? Boxee the company gives you the software for DIY installs for free. Boxee the company also does not make any money on the D-Link box you bought so your alleged $50 you are mad about, D-Link has it. Just sayin'.

You are not making a compelling argument that even with its problems that it was such an awful rip off. Though I understand your disappointment and me I'm a cheapskate who's glad he decided to wait with his DIY install till the bugs got worked out. But they will get worked out.

Funny things is, you are right, but that is not why most people are pissed.

Personally I started being pissed when we went from hacker friendly open source to closed, then loosing the 0.9 UI, then instable bug hell at 1.0+, then forum trolls telling me to shut up and not complain, then promises of updates/fixes that didn't come and bad communication..
I probably skipped some minors but you get the point.

Let me be clear, as a local media player is ok, IPTV concept apps/shows are much better in the US, less in EU where I am but still ok and better then the competetion.. allthough saldy: losing ground.
What happened to youtube will eventually happen to much more shows/apps.
    They will be blocked.

So I have the feeling I will end up with a local media player that offers premium content mostly which I can't use anyway.

    Finally some good news then!

Sadly there are many free online content providers trigger happy to block settop boxes out there.
