    Default vobs vs mkv UPDATE

For those having video playback issues from a server....

I HIGHLY recommend converting over to mkv's.

I did this to a few of my titles and the heavens opened up...

    chapters listed...checkmark
fast forward and BB knowing where I am in the movie...checkmark
    no "un-intended" fast forward....checkmark
metadata issues...resolved....(name the file using the IMDB format)
    checkmark.

Life has become better with BB...
I think I am going to stick around and wait for the netflix...hulu...etc...

Agreed - I started using MKVs many moons ago and haven't had a singal reason to change to anything different since

About the only thing that can't be done with MKVs is to burn them to physical media (they 'can' actually be burnt to disc, but...) most optical disk players do not support MKV playback - since 99% of my media/content is viewed from a file/MKV this is no problem at all

MKVs stream much smoother over a network, are inherantly smaller in file size than ISOs or most any other file/container -- plus if you use an app (like MakeMKV) you can cut out all but the main movie when ripping and save much more on the total file/container size - some of my ISOs are in the 45+/-Gb size range - and the same content ripped to an MKV, ripping only the main movie are in mid 24/25Gb size

I've downloaded MKV maker to rip my personal collection of DVD's but can't for the life of me figure out how to rip only the main movie. Any advice?

If you are referring to "MakeMKV" - after it scans the DVD it will usually show a list of separate files/parts of the disc and their file size, such as adverts for other movies - usually the largest file size is the main movie - uncheck all but the largest file

Sometimes you may see 2 or 3 main movies all withing 1 or 2 Gbs of being the same file size - this is because the movie may have been offered in different 'angles' or sometimes with an actors' or the directors' comment added - and then it becomes a crapshoot as to which one to choose -- trial and error has shown that usually the largest sized one has the comment added - so I usually choose the smallest sized main movie choice -- but keep in mind the middle size choice might not have the commentary add, but it may have different/additional scenes

It usually only takes 20/25 minutes to rip a main movie - so you may want to rip a couple of the choices and see what the difference is and delete the one you don't want to keep

My apologies, I meant to say that I downloaded makeMKV, the trial version (1.6.3 for Windows 7 x64). I don't see any options or disk breakdowns on the GUI. I've checked the preferences and everything. Is this something that is only available in the pay version?

MakeMKV is free for DVD rips - and free while in beta for BDs -- either way it is the full version

You won't see the different files/breaks until it scans a disc - when it's done scanning the UI changes slightly and here is where you can uncheck any or all files but the main movie

I think I just may stick with DVD Shrink and do ISO's. It usually takes 10 or so minutes (1 1/2 - 2 hrs movie) to rip just the main movie. Thanks for the response though!

After using DVD Shrink you can run any number of programs to make an MKV, such as Handbrake. I don't normally bother keeping ISOs around except on rare titles, mainly because I already have the original disc(s) as backup should I need to rip again for any reason.
