Default Selecting External Hard Drive w/ Boxee and XMBC

After using Putty and SSHing into ATV here is what I see.

    login as: frontrow
    frontrow@192.168.2.6's password:
    Last login: Fri Dec 24 08:16:59 2010 from 192.168.2.4
    -bash-2.05b$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *37.3 GB disk0
    1: EFI 34.0 MB disk0s1
    2: Apple_Recovery 400.0 MB disk0s2
    3: Apple_HFS OSBoot 900.0 MB disk0s3
    4: Apple_HFS Media 36.0 GB disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
    #: type name size identifier
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *298.1 GB disk1
    1: EFI 200.0 MB disk1s1
    2: Apple_HFS 297.8 GB disk1s2
    -bash-2.05b$

My external hard drive is getting picked up...What I am not sure about is how do I select it using Boxee or XMBC?

When I am under NitoTV and select File I get no responce at all...just a beep sound.

I have not made a recovery.dmg...is this the secret ingredient that I am missing?

Help would be greatly appreciated....thank you

As Boxee has SMB built in, you could try mounting that way, however I suspect that as its a mac formatted HD, you are probably trying to mount via afp. You answered your own question really. You need to install the os.dmg (recovery.dmg) in ~/documents, run smart installer within Nito, restart the atv (hard re-boot, NOT finder restart) and you should be able to enable afp within nito setting. You can create your own recovery.dmg or find one sailing the seven seas.

STRIKE THAT : Using putty means your using windows (?). You should be able to use SMB, smb://.........

    Within Boxee - Settings/ Network/ SMB Client

Yes I'm using Windows...Not quit sure what you mean by SMB...I am currently downloading recovery.dmn via Torrent but taking a coon's age...Most of the links I have found to make my own recovery.dmg do not work...Hard drive is also Fat32 and already has many files on it.

Is it an easier going thru XMBC?

Samba share - Sorry I hate mnemonics. Its a windows thing actually. You should be able to set this up very easily within boxee and XBMC. Open Boxee, Settings/ Network. You will see SMB client. Make sure your share settings are setup correctly for you to see them over a network.

I use xbmc and boxee and dont have any issues mounting through either so I cant say that either is better.

What version of windows are you using ? You can search the forum and find lots of disgruntled windows users trying to network

I use Mac's Linux and cough cough windows through parallels and dont have issues, but I always run the latest stuff. As a test you could try mounting a flash drive to the USB port on the ATV and see if it mounts within Nito. If your NAS etc still does not mount but the flash drive does, its probably a permissions/ settings issue.

I found my OS.dmg sailing the seven seas also.

Im guessing its either how its formatted or permissions. What's the format difference between the flash and HD ?

FYI - ANYONE ELSE THAT'S PERUSING THIS SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND ENJOY CHRISTMAS EVE INSTEAD !!!!!! BUT IF YOU MUST SEEK THE ANSWER TO ALL QUESTIONS BOXEE RELATED

    The 8G:
    Had Share This Folder Selected
    Permissions was everyone

    The 320G:
Had Do Not Share This Folder Selected

I changed it to Share This Folder and gave Permission to everyone...Connected it back to ATV and NitoTV is still not seeing this hard drive.
