Thread: Earth-Touch app stunning

    Default Earth-Touch app stunning

Every single video app developer, every single video streaming website developer, should have to sit down and watch an hour of Earth-Touch. This is how it should be done. On my HDTV it's like I'm about to be eaten by the lions. This is why I got an HDTV. This is why I get ornery when so many streams are shit. It can be done right and too many aren't in my opinion. Earth-Touch gets it, Revision 3 gets it, Koldcast gets it. I find it hard to understand why major network video podcasts look so sucky compared to Earth-Touch. If I go to watch Keith Olbermann, it's like watching 1970's color tv compared to Earth-Touch. Is it watchable, yes. Is it good quality, no. What is it Earth-Touch is doing so right and most everyone else is doing so wrong?
If I had ten thumbs, I would give Earth-Touch ten thumbs up for the beautiful video and the stunning quality you give to us. Thank you to the powers that be there.
    Everyone else.. take notes.

Well, it's all about the revenue that the major networks/studio generate from the cable/satellite companies, which often pay for content on a per subscribe basis. If you stop paying for cable/satellite to watch Keith in full HD glory over the Internet, both the networks and the cable/satellite overlords lose on the revenue.

Meanwhile, content providers like Koldcast, Revision 3, and Earth-Touch are distributing their content directly over the Internet while often bypassing "regular TV".

So it has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with money.

I understand your point and it for sure is valid. I think it's shortsighted on their parts, but then again, many of them are the same companies who didn't get digital music until Apple had the lion share of the market. It seems that until these relics in the Park Ave offices are mothballed the networks will not get that the Times they are a changin'. Build beautiful HD streams and they will come. If the idea in advertising is to hook the teenager in Des Moines as a lifetime customer, these companies really need to get with the program.
But, I think that only partially explains it. There are many online only sites that frankly offer crappy streams. What are they not doing that the sites I mentioned are doing tech wise?

I definitely agree about Earth-Touch being absolutely stunning. If I want to demonstrate the HD content available on my Boxee Box to somebody, I head straight for Earth-Touch. As well as the quality of the content, I'm equally impressed with how well it streams over my wireless network (I only had it buffer once, at the beginning of one of the videos).

Quite simply they are not either creating their content in HD or if they are, they're not distributing over the internet in HD. Why not? Who knows but I suppose you could always ask them. Perhaps if enough people ask, they'll realize there's a demand for high-qulity, Internet-distributed content. (To some extent, Hulu does get that, they provide 720p via Hulu+).

But ultimately I guess I don't understand the big mystery? I still get total crap SD channels with crap SD quality content from the cable company...

There are too many sites to write to in all honesty. I would think that at this point they wouldn't need to be written to about HD quality streams. If I can video in HD on my phone and upload it to Youtube in beautiful quality then I would think the sites would be able to handle it. I don't have the answers to it. As far as SD I suppose it depends on what cable/sat provider you use. My sat tv has 60 HD channels and I would say 40 are Earth-Touch quality, the others, not so much. The SD channels I can't watch on HDTV, too painful.
I'm not writing to beat on people and hope it's not taken that way. I'm writing because like the other poster I use Earth-Touch as the example of what Boxee Box can do within the limitations imposed by the content providers.
Hopefully in the next short while Earth-Touch won't be the exception, they will be the rule.
