Default AFP not finding HDD plugged into ATV USB port.

I hope I haven't duplicated a problem thread but I scoured the site and didn't find anything quite like the problem I'm having.

I got the USB port enabled after a little trial and error. Boxee sees my external HDD fine via the ATV USB port. Indexing seems to be working, albums are being added quite quickly. The problem I'm having is with AFP. I cannot acccess the External HDD (plugged into the ATV USB Port) on my Macbook Pro (I can move files to and from the ATV just fine using AFP), but can't find any option to mount the USB HDD so I can move files back and forth from that (which is my main goal here...that will be my network drive for all computers in the house if I can get AFP to recognize it).

    Running Apple TV 2.3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you have AFP running on your ATV... if so, it's a matter of getting AFP on your ATV so add your hard drive as a shared volume.

Side question: can I ask you how you installed AFP? All the instructions I've found so far have not worked.

if you enabled usb and afp with nitotv, a dialog box should appear when connecting to afp://appletv.local from your mac which will let you choose which drive you want to mount, ie: "frontrow" "OSboot" "Media" "USBdrive"

Have you tried connecting to afp://appletv.local/nameofdrive ?

I installed AFP from docbrown's instructions (Thanks Doc)

I just tried that... afp//appletv.local/Music (<-name of HDD)

This is the response I get on my Macbook

"The Volume 'Music" cannot be mounted."

Then it says 'Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -6602)

And I know that when I AFP into the ATV I'm supposed to be able to see the USB HDD but the only mounting options I get there are the ATV ones...Front Row/Media/OS Boot.

Thanks, I was hoping there was a less techy way of doing it. Plus you have to hunt down an AppleTV 1.0 image.

Soooo - thoughts on this? Tried sudo chmod 755'ing the file but still the same error:

    Code:
    -bash-2.05b$ sudo mv /mach_kernel.prelink /mach_kernel.prelink.bak
mv: rename /mach_kernel.prelink to /mach_kernel.prelink.bak: Read-only file system

As added info when I check the ATV via Terminal and a 'mount' command here's what I get.

    /dev/disk0s3 on / (local, journaled)
    devfs on /dev (local)
    fdesc on /dev (union)
    <volfs> on /.vol
    /dev/disk0s4 on /mnt (local, journaled)
    /dev/disk1s1 on /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/MUSIC (local)

So clearly the drive is there, and ATV is recognizing it. Just can't figure out how to get at it via the AFP.

You need the AppleTV 1.0 image because it's the only one that contains the AFP enabling files. Apple removed it in 1.1 and beyond. As for the AppleTV 1.0 image...it's not that hard to find. Google would probably point you right to it.

If you need AFP, and don't have OS 1.0. Go here:
