I have a 1010+, works fine with SMB, and I know of someone using it with the built in uPnP media streaming service.
So I think it should be ok.

Thanks yerbabie
Works perfectly with 410j for me.
Works fine with my DS409Slim using samba shares.
Enabling guest read access privliges on media folders read by Boxee will avoid any user/pass prompts.
Works like a charm on my DS508.
I have a DS209+, streams fine to the BB using samba shares. I was asked to enter a user/pass once, but never again. It's a good combo...
I've got a Boxee Box, but I'm thinking about buying the Synology DS211j NAS to replace the old 500GB Buffalo Linkstation NAS I'm current currently using to serve content to Boxee.
Any additional feedback anyone here has about the Synology DS211j, or Synology servers in general, or preferred alternatives to Synology - well, your comments and advice would be appreciated!
I'm especially interested in everyone's experiences with using Synology NASs with the Boxee Box. My primary use of the NAS would be for storing videos, music, and photos for playback on the Boxee Box.
Hoping for a relatively easy set-up in terms of getting the NAS up and running and getting Boxee to connect to it.
Also, being on the slow side of the newest Synology products, do you think the DS211J will be fast enough to deliver HD video to Boxee, etc. (It'll definitely be a lot faster than the old NAS I'm currently using, which actually works well with Boxee anyway - just very occasional buffering with really big files. So I don't think I need anything more expensive than the DS211J, but I'm open to arguments to the contrary.)
I'm thinking about buying two 2TB drives for the DS211J and using the NAS in RAID 1 - but the Synologys (and Qnaps) seem really finicky about drives not working as expected, even when they're listed as being officially compatible. I've been trying to get help on their forums but it's like an abandoned wasteland over there these days, with lots of people asking questions but few answers:

I'm thinking about getting the Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 drives for the NAS, but given the lack of response I'm getting in the Synology thread above, I'm wondering if I should be looking at a different NAS solution for Boxee entirely.
On the other hand, reviewers always love Synologys, so I'm not ready to give up on the idea entirely - especially if people on the Boxee forum continue to give 'em a thumbs up
Some guidance would be great.

Any Synology NAS should be fine as a basic media storage pool, you can find a HDD compatibility list on their website. All you'll be doing is setting up shared folders on the NAS then the Boxee Box reads those, thats all there is to it.
As for Synology's forums yeah there not the most helpful of places, you may prefer going with QNAP NAS as their community is much more active which is helpful if your a beginner.
I definitely recommend QNAP NAS. They roll out frequent firmware updates for even their older models, hardware is rock solid and forums very helpful. I have been using a TS-109 for years and intend on upgrading soon for expanded storage. No problems streaming and I enjoying qgetmobile app on iphone to upload torrents remotely. It appears Cisco is also rebranding one of their units for SOHO use.
