Thread: Still can't get SMB shares from OSX to work at all on Boxee Box

Default Still can't get SMB shares from OSX to work at all on Boxee Box

I've tried and tried. Here's where I'm at: Mac Pro tower running 10.6.5, latest Boxee Box release. I have internal SATA drives shared on my mac pro tower. I have file sharing on, I have SMB checked in my options box with two different user accounts with check boxes next to them. I've made sure that these users have Read or Read/Write access. I can connect to my SMB shares on a WDTV live (it prompts me for username and password) and I can connect to the SMB shares from another mac laptop after also typing in the username and password - both cases I can stream wirelessly any 1080p file without issue. I now have my Boxee Box on a wired connection to my router (for troubleshooting purposes). I go to Settings > Network > Servers - here I've tried web server on or off and I've tried having Enable Windows file sharing on and off but regardless the following happens when I try to add sources - it lists three options: "__MSBROWSE__(Samba)", "MEDIA (Samba)" this is the SMB share that I've set up on my mac pro, "UPnP". When I try to add "MEDIA (Samba)", the little wheel spins and then it says "Error Operation not permitted" without having ever prompted me for a username or password. How am I messing this up? I've tinkered with all sorts of different streamers not to mention consider myself quite tech savvy but I can't get it to see my gd SMB shares. Any help?

    Just to clarify, these settings:

I go to Settings > Network > Servers - here I've tried web server on or off and I've tried having Enable Windows file sharing on and off
do not affect being able to access shared drives on your network (or not).

the following happens when I try to add sources - it lists three options: "__MSBROWSE__(Samba)", "MEDIA (Samba)" this is the SMB share that I've set up on my mac pro, "UPnP". When I try to add "MEDIA (Samba)", the little wheel spins and then it says "Error Operation not permitted" without having ever prompted me for a username or password.
What happens if you go to the Main Menu and use Files>>Browse>>Network to get to your shared drives?

When I try to access my shares through the files path - I see the same list of possibilities on my network and when I click on "MEDIA (Samba)" this time, the little wheels spins and then it says "Loading Error Could not access file, directory or device."

As for the other options - I knew those shouldn't effect seeing my SMB shares but another user mentioned that had helped someone else in my case for some reason. At this point, I'd be willing to blow off the empty ports on the back of my boxee box ala a Nintendo cartridge if it might help...

Just to add - I've tried a factory restore and re-upgrade to the latest Boxee software version...

Anybody? Any ideas? Is there just a major bug with Boxee Box and SMB shares on mac? Everything else seems to handle them fine...

It takes me back to the file and I can easily hit play and resume from but the wife wasnt a big fan of having a movie randomly quit out 5 times at high emotion moments. Well on to fixing this issue that I never had with other streamers, I want you to work boxee, so bad!

any energy saver issues? e.g. is the mac set to sleep after 20 min?

That's what I was checking first... I have the check box un checked for "put hard disks to sleep when possible" because it drives me nuts having my hard drives have to spin up when I don't use them for 15 minutes. Oddly enough, my "Display Sleep" setting is at 20 minutes on the dot but how could just my displays on my mac going to sleep cause the Boxee Box to exit out of a movie, maybe it's just a tiny interruption in the SMB share?

Oddly enough as well, I had my first lock up ever with my Boxee Box. It was when I went to shut it down after having watched a movie with the wife off my local SMB shares. I go to shut down, and then it just sits on that screen unresponsive until I had to do a hard power off.
