Cinavia seems to be designed for detecting copies based on the fact that the Cinavia enabled device is detecting the watermark in the audio stream but not the presence of the authentication signal.
The two forms of Cinavia protection that seem to be in wide release are:
1) The cinema watermark, where movies recorded in a cinema (so called CAM releases) will also record the cinema audio watermark. Cinavia enabled devices will immediately stop playback on detecting this watermark while informing the user that a breach of copyright was detected.
2) The BluRay watermark, where the playback of the media file will be impacted (temporary audio loss or stopping of playback) when the playback device detects the watermark but not the volume id key that each original BluRay disk has. I can imagine that this form is only usable in BluRay playback devices, since an amplifier/receiver can't directly see this second item (unless the Cinavia enabled playback device somehow transfers this to the amplifier/receiver via the HDMI link and/or TOSLink).
I can imagine that the first form of Cinavia will work on all Audio handling devices (probably by switching off the sound completely on the Amplifier/Receiver), I'm having a hard time imaging that the second form would work with only a Cinavia enabled Amplifier/Receiver in the total system.
Most of my information comes from the following article on Anandtech, so maybe it is a good idea to read this and other sources on the web on Cinavia

I believe pjk has pretty much explained this in his previous post... and from what I understand, it's the Hardware "Player" that detects Cinavia and triggers it if no aacs is detected, if the hardware player has been infected through a firmware update -- (and not the electronics used to amp./send the audio, ie... the Sony HT system mentioned in this thread)
So playing an infected file/media from the BBox and sending it 'Through' the Sony system to amp. the audio should not be a problem (even if the Sony's Blu-Ray hardware player has the Cinavia infection from a firmware update) - the infection from the BR player's firmware does not infect it's onboard audio electronics/amp.
So to answer the question in the previous post... "Will a Warner Bros .mkv file work when the sound is pumped through a Blu-Ray Home Cinema system with Cinavia installed?" ... ... If the Cinavia infected WB's mkv is played from the Boxee Box (or any non-infected hardware player)... The file should play fine, without Cinavia being triggered
Cinavia would be much more successful if it were made mandatory for all TVs, not just BluRay players. And even moreso if it were introduced into all audio receivers. Because it's not, it's pretty much a non-issue and will not likely be an issue going forward. There are many ways to get around audio-based watermarking for your own personal digital collection.

Also for Windows, Linux & Mac OS X: Windows Media Center, SageTV, JRiver Media Center, MediaPortal, XBMC, Plex, MythTV, etc.
Can anyone confirm that Cinavia will run from Boxee Box to tv via a Cinavia infected Blu-Ray surround sound system?
