Cinavia is harmless as long as the media player does not support it. Boxee owners have nothing to worry about.

However the AACS LA (makers of DRM for Blu-ray) are now forcing Cinavia as mandatory for future Blu-ray licensees so it is going to be more difficult in the future to avoid. Particularly for other network media players that want the full Blu-ray menu playback experience - Sigma Designs chipsets SDK now uses Cinavia so future chips from them are going to be in a tight spot (probably why they are porting XBMC to their own chipsets as OSS ignores Cinavia).

Hopefully the open source community can develop working Blu-ray menu playback system so media players which leverage open source software can continue to ignore Cinavia and deliver the full menu experience which Boxee could also use.

Cinavia is quite insidious because it survives re-encoding, it may not be possible to remove but as long as the media player does not support Cinavia your okay.

So from what i gathered the player needs to support Cinavia so aslong as it doesn't its not a problem.. right?

But what in the future... do any know what boxee stand is on this officialy? can or will they let themself be pressed to include Cinavia support in the player?

You're correct about the player having to support Cinavia before Cinavia can have an affect - and to the best of my knowledge Cinavia will only perform it's affect via physical media that was burnt from a rip of the original infected disc

I can not speak for Boxee, but I would be very surprised to say the least if the BBox were to support Cinavia in the future

Even if you take a video recorder and record the a/v content playing from the TV, Cinavia will still be there and any player that supports it will take the appropriate measures when playing back the digital file from the recorder.

You should probably contact Avner directly (at boxee d0t tv). Boxee employees rarely visit here and they certainly do not read every post... (but honestly, regardless of what response you get directly from Boxee, there are NO guarantees as to what the future will bring).

This isn't accurate at all. I used to own a PS3. I never played a video game on it as all consoles are inferior to PC gaming.

Anyway, I used for my entire movie collection. I streamed everything. If I couldn't back up my own copy of whatever, the I would get someplace else. Usually in .m2ts or .mp4 file format. Streaming media from your PC to your PS3 would STILL cause CINAVIA to engage the file's audio track on the PS3 and cause the audio to drop out and a message to appear on the screen. CINAVIA is insidious! It survives re-encoding, transcoding, time travel, and the flux vortex. It can't be stopped. Yet..

Aside from the horrible Sony Online fiasco, PS3, Xbox, wii, all crap to me. I took my PS3 and tossed in the dumpster behind my house. It felt good. If Boxee can continue to do it's thing I'll be happy.

I'd be incredibly surprised if there wasn't a Cinavia watermark stripper released relatively soon, and perhaps built into products like AnyDVD and FabDVD. In fact, I know that SlySoft is already working on it.

After that happens, this issue will become moot. Until then, you'll just have to use players that don't support Cinavia. And since Boxee/D-Link don't even have a BluRay license, I don't expect they'll be implementing this anytime soon. They can only force it on players that absolutely need an AACS license.

But yes, it currently affects ALL media, regardless of format, but only if the player supports the technology. The watermark is integrated into the audio master recording, and survives all current transcoding and capture methods.
