Thread: "Unboxing Porn" App - No Description, Big WTF?

Default "Unboxing Porn" App - No Description, Big WTF?

So my girlfriend was browsing the apps section yesterday when I heard a "wtf is this?" from the other room and here the "Unboxing Porn" app was glaring at us. I had no idea what this was and had to check to be sure the adult content filter was on. Only after I researched this app online did I find that it's a website about unboxing gadgets. Even so, doesn't this app lean more towards adult themes?

Having no description with this app does NOT help its cause. I know I'm going to be demonstrating the Boxee Box for a friend this week to give to her kids for Christmas, but having this app in the app library with no description makes it difficult for me to recommend this product for children.

Which got me thinking, it seems Boxee's adult content filter is "Rated X" and "Not Rated X." Shouldn't users have a little more options, i.e. "Child Friendly", "Mature", and "Adult Content"? The "Unboxing Porn" App is a prime example of the need for a little more freedom in filtering content. For now, a description of this app should be added.

Unboxing porn is a geek show about unboxing tech productucts.

That said, I agree they need a better adult filter - it currently only toggles adult or non adult apps and feeds being viewable, but you can still see adult videos etc.

I would agree with it. Even when adult content is disabled the amount of apps/movies with adult theme is astonishing. There should be a way to filter those out.

That'd be pretty difficult for on-line content, unless the content provider explicitly sets a restriction level. And unless that was standardized somehow, it'd be difficult to manage as I don't know how many video container formats allow for rating metadata.

I agree that rating local content would be difficult unless done through metadata, but in this case I'm speaking of Apps. Apps already go through a submission process, so I think it wouldn't be too difficult for someone from Boxee to deem content as friendly, mature, or adult. I for one don't care about the Unboxing Porn app now that I researched it, but parents giving this to their kids on Christmas Day are another story. I'm going to add this to the feature request and see if anything comes of it.

There is no "app" called Unboxing Porn. It is a show link from Revision 3. If you saw it on the box it was a referal from someone you follow or you saw the show listing in the Revision 3 television show app. They have about a dozen shows. And that show has nothing to do with porn. So, there is no need for the dev team to approve it.

Since you are moving on to adult apps and the need for them to be filtered:
This has already been discussed and implemented in boxee a long time ago. Apps are already tagged as adult and there is an adult app content filter in the settings area that is turned on by default. They don't show in boxee unless you've enabled them.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

Wonder if lukad was meaning his GF saw it under Shows...If I remember right I have it saved to my Favorite Shows list. I am guessing that's were his GF saw it. It's got some good Vids on it! Never know some people might have a "Tech fetish" lol...I thought it was porn when I first saw it too....I would guess my wife would think the same thing if she saw it on there, but I already showed her all the porn ones so she knows now

I stand corrected about the show being a show and not an app. However, your second paragraph overlooks my point: that simply filtering content as porn and not porn is not adequate enough for families. This show had no description, and though I'm no prude, I wasn't about to open up a TV show with the potential of having porn pop up on my television to find out what it was. What about shows such as Southpark, or Family Guy, (or anything adult swim) which some families don't want to expose their grade school children to?

At least having a three tiered filter system, where content is labeled friendly, mature, and adult, would fill this void. I'm sure the folks at Boxee could come up with something adequate.
