Lightbulb Ability to import friends from Hotmail, GMail, and Yahoo address-books

Ability to import friends email addresses from your Hotmail, GMail, and Yahoo mail addressbook.

Should make it much easier for users to invite their friends to Boxee if this could be done directly from the Boxee GUI (or even from the boxee.tv website after login there)

Something to think about adding before the first Boxee final release

Open source code for PHP scripts is available to do this, see for example:
    http://curl.phptrack.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=282

PS! I guess local Outlook Express, Outlook, Mac OS X Mail, and Thunderbird export and import into Boxee could be added as well for desktop uses that use a such e-mail client instead of webmail. One might even be able to extend this to import contacts from FaceBook, Myspace, and Orkut, all directly from Boxee and all to make it easier to invite friends without knowing their e-mail address by heart.

already in the works. its not up since we want the server user base to grow gradually and with relevant users, not dumps of hundreds of irrelevant users.

with the public beta it will probably be available.

I understand, it smarter to wait until Boxee is as stable as it can be so first-time users get a better impression, ...first impression means A LOT.

I would actually suggest to wait even longer before enabling this, so you make it available at the same time you release the final version of Boxee 1.0 (and coordinate it so that you release Boxee 1.0 FINAL for Linux, Mac, and Windows at the exact same time), ...just make sure that your back-end server can handle the load at that time, as the userbase might increase a hundred fold, if not a thousand fold over night.

The way I see it this kinda stuff is the whole point of Boxee. In the future I suspect Boxee will be able to all kinds of great social network type stuff. At the moment they are just getting the media player part down but once that is more or less finished then the social side of Boxee will get a whole bunch of loving.

Sorry but what does that have to do with "Ability to import friends from Hotmail, GMail, and Yahoo address-books"? ...is that not off-topic and should be discussed in a separate thread?

Now that you mention it it is a bit off topic but it fits into the "social" aspect of Boxee

Yes but my feature request was not about the social aspect of Boxee in general, it was very specifically only about the practical means of importing your contacts into XBMC from third-party contact lists. So you would only be on-topic if you request the ability to import contacts from Facebook (Myspace, and Orkut, etc.)

Auto-updating your Facebook status with what movie or music you're using in Boxee is totally off-topic for this thread, ...feel free to start a new thread though (if you do then I will reply to that how you can already achieve that result today, I will not post that here because it is, once again, off-topic )
